2002 newb

Hi gents, just a quick intro. I'm in PA and the vintage car bug has bitten me hard. Initially wanted a Beetle but was always more of a BMW nut. Owned many previous BMW's but currently the stable is devoid of any BMW's so I think it's time to pick up a 2002. I'm sure many a newb have come across your paths in a similar state, clueless and looking to learn. Consider me just one more in the herd.

I have not purchased a 2002 as of yet. I'm doing the requisite research including reading the primer on this site regarding buying a 2002. Any potential target will go through a PPI from a reputable shop or mechanic. I'm not terribly adept at car repair so will likely have to find one that's in decent daily driver condition and/or restored to the point that my limited abilities could handle the rest. I also need auto tranny since traffic in my area is brutal.

I've located a local 2002, previously owned West Coast and rust free '75 Inka orange on black/saddle interior. I noted from the FAQ that '75s were the least desirable models. So, my question is why were they so undesirable and how underwhelming is the engine? Are the mods required to lively it up significant and expensive? Apparently the California Emission equipment has been removed. Asking price is $6,200

Here's what's been done to '75 Inka

It's all about condition and price relevant to your budget. Year does not matter at this point unless you have a strong aesthetic preference regarding bumpers or tail lights.

I have a '74 and run the original bumpers--to me it's a period correct look and I worry much less about parallel parking than the folks with chrome bumpers or no bumpers at all.

As I recall, from 1974 on there is also an internal door cross brace which might come in handy in an accident, along with the lovely bumpers.

Seriously, first condition then price. Everything else is at best a distant third.

Check your local emissions lawsrules. I'm in York pa and I own a 1974. If I had bought a 1975 model, I would have to put it through emissions (not on my 74 though). Emissions laws vary a lot from county to county in PA.

increased underhood temps that were hard on engine components. As Marshall mentioned, it seems that has been removed.

For some reason the gummi-haar seat pads in the '75 didn't hold up as well as other years, especially the rear seat back.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
