Anyone Trailer an 02 on a single axle trailer?

Recommended Posts

Just wondering if anyone has experience trailering on a single axle trailer. Thinking of putting mine on a 6x14 landscape style open trailer for a 1200 mile trip. Tow vehicle is not an issue, will be using a 36' Class A motorhome with a v10.

I have a heavy duty car strap set (axle straps, ratchets, etc) so I'm good there as well.

what is the rating of the trailer? in case of a flat, a trailer with four wheels is always better than two. having said that, I am sure many have trailered light vehicles on a single axle trailer. Brakes on the trailer may be required in your state as well.

I have a 46 Willys jeep and I have tried numerous trailering options. Everything from a uhaul that would hold a big old caddy to a car dolly. I finally settled on a tandem axle trailer - life is good. It doesn't sway and tracks nicely behind my SUV.

They fit into 12 foot U-haul trailers too. The tailgate doesn't close all the way though.

Yes, all the time.

You need the heavily- rated stiff trailer tires,

and brakes aren't a bad idea if your tow rig is smaller.

Otherwise, it works just fine.

Mine is a single axle , 7 leaf springs , 195/14 light truck tyres 8 ply , no probs use it for the E30 as well .1200 miles is a big trip though, tandem axle gives a bit more lee way , maybe the U Haul would be a good idea .

make sure the axle and tires are rated for 50% more than the combined weight of the trailer, car and any stuff you put in the car. most landscape trailers i have seen are not up to the task...only rated for lawn tractor level weight.

personnaly, i would get a dual axle car trailer. and two spare tires.

+1

best advice in the thread..

Bring two spares and you won't need them. Bring no spares and you'll have two flats.

Load range D or E tires for your trailer only. None of that cheap sissy stuff from walmart. Cheap trailer tires are the downfall of any trip.

I always have a spare. So far, it has guaranteed I haven't needed it...

I will either be purchasing a brand new trailer with upgraded tires....

or rent a U-Haul car trailer one way....

or will have the place I bought the car from install front base plates so I can tow it flat with my Blue Ox hitch.

Appreciate all the replies. Gives me a lot to contemplate. If the car is sturdy enough to tow 4 flat that would be the best for me in my current situation, as I am on the road all the time going to tracks with my RV for work, and would generally not be given a long enough spot to park both a RV & trailer.

Well the custom front tow plates have been fabricated and installed. Its quite a thing of beauty. So the 02 is now hitched to the back of my motorhome ready (hopefully!) for a 1200 mile journey from Vermont to Atlanta towed all 4 down.

Wish me luck!

good luck and post a pic!

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,
