Getrag Transmission Gear Ratios- 240 a bad transmission??

I found this on the Bimmer Forum. Spent about 30min looking here. Couldn't find it.

Now I need to know why the 240 is not a good transmission, any help?

Getrag Transmissions.

The 1977-79 E21 320i uses the Getrag 242 (4-speed).

The 1980-82 320i(s) uses the Getrag 245 (5-speed).

The 1983 E21 320i(s) uses the same Getrag 240 (5-speed) as the 1984 E30 318i(s).

4-speed - 320i - Getrag 242

Gear ratios

1st - 3.764

2nd - 2.02

3rd - 1.32

4th - 1.00

5-speed - 320i - Getrag 245/4 Overdrive transmission ’80 – ‘82

Gear ratios

1st - 3.764

2nd - 2.00

3rd - 1.33

4th - 1.00

5th - 0.81

5-speed - 320i - Getrag 245/10 close ratio/”dogleg”

Gear ratios

1st - 3.764

2nd - 2.325

3rd - 1.612

4th - 1.229

5th - 1.000

5-speed - 320i - Getrag 240

Gear ratios - almost the same as a 245/4

Transmission Weights:

Getrag 242 - 48 lbs

Getrag 245 - 63 lbs

Getrag 240 - 62 lbs

Both input shaft diameter for the pilot bearing .471”/11.9634mm

The Getrag 240 transmission came with aluminum shift forks, which were not as durable as the steel forks in the 245. Aparently this caused some 240 failures. If I recall there are some members here with 240 transmissions in thier racecars, as they are lighter and shorter than the 245.

I have a 240 from a '83 320i that I will be installing soon. Others have installed 240 transmissions as well so Im sure they will chime in.

Edit: If you get a 240 get one from a 320i. The E30 240's have 2 mounting tabs and do not have the speedometer cable hookup.

Thanks MAD02 I really appreciate it. I like the lighter and shorter idea. I had great luck with a T10 on a raging small block even though all the old timers said it wouldn't work.

I think it has more to do with the left foot than the strength of the transmission.

That, and how hard you shove on the shifty lever.

If you let it 'drop' in and match revs, it won't see much

stress on the forks...
