Alpina and Borrani (CMR) 13” Steel Rims

My car was.originally owned by BMW Concessonaires, the UK BMW importer, and I am told this was the managing directors car. At this time it received various upgrades, split front bumper, airdam, wheels and was specified with electric sunroof, CR 5sp and LSD.

I believe this set of wheels to be original with the car since 1973. 

I have the centre caps and the special wheel nuts as well.

Thanks for posting.  Yes, they probably have been together from new.  And sets of five are quite rare.

 

Tell us about the current (old) paint finish.  It appears to be a cream color.  Or is it the commonly known gray-beige in very bright light?  On the barrel (i.e., in the tire race), the cream color appears to be applied over black paint.  But I don't see evidence of black paint on the faces, even though I see evidence of re-painting.

 

And please post photos of your rims' center caps and lug nuts!  I ask because it is rare to find a complete set of original rims with caps and lugs and I'd like to see what yours look like.

That black stuff is tyre debris, it's on the surface and scrapes off with a fingernail. I don't think the wheels have been repainted. The colour in the unfaded rim area is a light grey, definitely not creamy, just a very light neutral grey. As measured in the midday sun with a 50yr old male eyeball.

 

The wheel nuts I need to look for...

 

The centre caps are 45mm high and 60mm barrel diameter. They originally had a simple Alpina sticker as a logo...something like a thin plastic/metallic film...15 YRs ago I got some polycarbonate alpina logos from a bmw dealer to replace the disintegrating stickers. They have been rechromed over quite pitted steel...a bit ugly close up.

Well, the fellow enthusiast in Germany that I bought my Borrani center caps from contacted me a few weeks ago to see if I was interested in a set of Alipina Borranis with center caps that he had for sale, naturally I obliged . 

 

I think you will like these Steve, they appear to be a very early set of R1-440's dated 4/69 on the race which is outside of your data range I believe. The wheels have been painted (poorly) and some scratched off to show that they are 13 x 5 1/2 set of R1-440's but I can't see any more markings around the hub. Otherwise they look to be a well worn, but in good shape set of round hole Alpina's, I am going to try to clean up the center caps tonight and I will post more pics but they fit perfectly. Here are some pics:

DAMMIT... you are amassing quite the collection!!  Early Alpina logo on the center caps... very nice find.  Not that I'm way jealous, or anything...

The caps cleaned up pretty well with some Meguiars Motorcycle all metal polish:

HI all, I've decided to replace my alpina/borrani wheels with Rota r20s.  These wheels have been greatly enjoyed but I feel it's time for someone else to enjoy them.  I have been swapping back and forth between these wheels and e21 turbines for years now and and I like the brightness of the turbines better against the colorado and I wanted to "upgrade" to a  15 inch wheel.  So I bought the rotas and plan to sell the borrani and e21 wheels.  Can anyone let me know what a fair price range would be for both the seller and myself for these alpina borrani wheels with center caps?  They are in good,but not excellent, shape, and I will post detailed photos when they are in the for sale section.  Thanks for any ideas.

Here’s a point of comparison.  I don’t know, however, if Bruce’s rims sold, or sold at the asking price.  I’ll just add that the Alpina steelies (Bruce’s and johninsf’s) are much rarer than the Borrani steelies.

Yeah, like Steve said (above), I would think at least a thousand, and probably more.  

 

I have the triangle Borranis, and with the caps, I have at least that much in them, and yours are rarer, and have the magical word "Alpina" attached to them.  

 

To me, one big selling point for yours is that they are currently running on a car.  They could be bolted on a car, and go.  Sure, someone could refinish them, but they are (I'm assuming) true, can be balanced, and are good to go.  Some of these sets, as you see in this thread, are projects.

In my (many) years as a car guy, and a car guy with a sizable collection of rims, I have only had to trash two rims:  a pair of 6” Borrani’s that had been some guy’s “snow rims” (more like Baja 500 rims). Both came to me in a form that no wheel shop could begin to make true.  These are strong, heavy rims; I still marvel at how abused these two were!
