"Group Buy" - Fiberglass Turbo Air Dam/Front Spoil

Here is my plan:

Blunt is selling the original for about $250 for a limited time (Part# 51711831355)

I was thinking of buying one and making a fiberglass copy and selling the copy for about $150 (shipped) each.

Anyone interested? If there are enough folks (2+), this may be a great idea and I'd be willing to make the copies and take care of all the logistics.

The fender is like this one in this post:

There are also the wheel well "arches - which I can copy as well and sell for about $60 shipped (per corner).

COVERING REAR LEFT 51711831353

COVERING REAR RIGHT 51711831354

COVERING FRONT LEFT 51711831351

COVERING FRONT RIGHT 51711831352

::::UPDATE July 2::::

OK. Here is an update. I priced everything out and it does not look too positive.

Materials and shipping is the key.

If I sell at $160 shipped, it will pocket $60 ($100 goes for materials + shipping).

If I sell for $200 shipped, i will pocket $100 (same logic as above).

Major materials list (in order of application) for the front air dam and prices (per part) in case anyone is wondering (this does not include the original parts and the materials needed to make the molds as well as work brushes, rollers, release wax, etc..):

- PVA (very little use) - $2

- White Gelcoat (a bit less than a quart) - $20

- Fiberglass (2 layers of 1 1/2 mat + support strands on corners) - $15

- Resin (about a gallon, no more) - $35

The 4 arches/wheel flares are much much smaller so the original estimated price is appropriate.

So there you have it folks. You could get a new airdam for $300+ from your dealer or a fiberglass copy for $200. I am basically saving you $100 and as much as i want to do this, I feel that there is just not enough demand. If I had 8,7 or even 5 folks interested, I think that would be ok. Until then, lets put this on ice.

Anyone interested please reply to this form and once we have around 6 people, we can confirm and begin.

::::UPDATE July 3::::

2 people are interested. If anyone else is interested, please post a reply. I will start the process if i get a few more hits.

Good luck finding the Driver Front wheel arch. They are out of stock everywhere and 'in production' according to BMW, which means they could become available sometime in the next few years....

how long do you think this will take to get made? I'm starting my car's restoration next week

Great question. I'm getting the fiberglass related items this weekend. The fender in nla in North America (per BMW dealer), so it is being sent from the Germany warehouse - which takes 2 weeks.

All that and a week to perfect the mold, Id say we will have a final product by the end of July.

When I buy the fiberglass this weekend, I will reconfirm the final price I can charge per air dam - if its still around $160, that's great (and ill move fwd), but if its significantly more, I will hold off buying before confirming the updated price with all interested parties via this post.

Hi all. A quick update. I researched how much it would be to make the mold and the subsequent parts from that and it looks like we should be ok with the approximate cost of $160 per air dam.

However, what I found during my research is that the air dam does not sit well on fender-less cars (non-turbo fender-ed cars). Meaning that the sides will stick out a bit and may not look very clean.

There has been a lot of discussion about the turbo dam and I am including a few pics to show my point below. Here are a few posts:

So I wanted to check with you guys before we proceed.

You will also need 2 support brackets to mount on the bottom of the air dam and your actual fender - see this part #18 (51711834596):

    BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

    Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

    History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

    In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,
