Street head suggestions?

Hi everyone.

After getting a "hurry along" post from my mate Oz Tom, it's time to finally start doing up my engine.

I'm starting with the head (because I have a spare one). I want to be build a street/performance head, not racing. I want something fast and loud enough to be fun, but not so lumpy that it's horrible when city driving.

I want to order parts from Ireland Engineering. I need some suggestions on what to buy and modification ideas such as porting and oversized pistons etc.

Btw, I have a set of 40mm side drafts, but might even switch to 45mms...

Keep the 40's

Add a 304 cam

Clean up the ports to match the intake and exhaust.

Have fun..

I'm doing the same to a head now.

Heck no... I ran a 316 in the race car. Wished I had a 328 with 50's.

I've always used the Schrick. Never tried the IE.

Honestly since you're buying everything from Ireland anyway, I would discuss it with them. They would have a vested interest in selling you what is best for you. If you can I recommend sitting in other cars so you can get a sense of what various cars feel like.

But I think a 292 with some bigger valves, stiffer springs, etc would make a nice head for your proposed setup.

I find it difficult to imagine a Schrick 304 being a good camshaft for a street car - it's got a rough idle (lots of overlap on the Schrick), not much for power below 4,500 rpm (note: that based on my experience, a 11.5:1 compression motor, DGAS 2x38 carb, light crank/flywheel/clutch, set up for racing). -KB

I have a 304 deg Schrick cam in my engine, along with head work, 9,5:1 compression an 84mm stroke M3 crank and a 2,5 inch exhaust system. The engine has a lot of torque even as low as 2000 RPM and can be driven in 5th gear at that RPM without bucking. However, the faster it turns the more it seems to want to go. The idle is terrible, just like a typical racecar. I don't really relish the idea of running the engine past 7000 RPM and have come to the conclusion that a 292 deg cam would be a lot more practical for daily driving. And just so you know, a 2.5" exhaust system is loud, no matter what you use for mufflers.

Thanks for the replies guys.

As I'll be keeping the bottom end predominantly stock and want dome decent mid range power and don't want to vibrate the fillings out of my teeth, the 292 is sounding pretty sensible.

I'll certainly give the IE guys a call to talk through the build. I think oversized valves and stronger springs (or double) is also on the cards.

I'be got a set of extractors sitting at home as well to let her breathe a bit better. Not sure yet what I'll mate them too, but will take your advice that 2.5' might be a little loud.

Had anyone had their head gas-flowed etc? Out here its probably going to cost me about $1500 to get flowing etc.done, along with the build. Worth it?

I'd spend the $1500 on suspension before I bothered flowing an M10 head-

if you're using the stock bottom end, you don't want to spin 7500, and it

flows pretty well up to that point.
