My 1976 1502

Hey thanks Ludvig! i think i have found a lowish miles m42 hopefully if its still for sale and also an getrag 240 box as from what i can work out the 240 is shorter than the 250 from the e36? the overdrive of the 240 was also a good encouragement!

 

finished both seat mounts, fixed some little holes and located the accel pedal bracket and got a first coat of por15 down in the cabin and washed/cleaned hoovered out all the dust and rubbish.

then on sunday morning my friend Dan came round and we removed most of the ancilliaries off the engine and i got him to cut out the battery tray

after he left i got the rear subframe, exhaust and driveshaft off and then took apart the subframe and also the diff as it has leaking seals

also been getting the underside cleaned up with the wire brush and removing some surface rust in the tunnel

next job is get the subframe mount areas welded up from the bottom and clean up any rust that was inaccessible when the frame was on and then clean up the frame and fit new bushes and then refit. my new rear tower and quarter panels should hopefully be turning up today so i can get all that welded up.

last night i started to remove the right rear wheel housing only to discover that there was a rusty hole into the cabin hiding under the sound deadening and another to match on the other side!! annoying after 2 hours of cleaning and painting in there! so i figured id just remove all the sound deadening off the rear panel. A pain of a job but got rid of a few extra kilos of dead weight i suppose

need to clean these bits up before i weld them onto the new panels

new sill cover panels so that i can fix the rear quarter panels. am i right to just chop them off and discard the actual sill areas? The PO had used something similar to cover rust and it had spread nastily between the panels so i dont fancy that! however on test fitting the door i noticed a rather large gap of maybe a half inch between the sill and the lower door edge from the bottom. Is this normal when just the original sills are fitted?

Yes just chop 'em up. Them there are over sills, fine for chopping up but go easy when welding up as they are a bit on the flimsy side and the heat will pull them in every direction. Not sure what the door gaps should be as mine are off the car but maybe someone can chime in.

 

BTW what happened to that 2 litre engine?

it appears to be going in their 2002 race car. By the time i weighed up the cost of new bearings, rings, seals, rockers etc the price was just getting crazy and that would be before i went about buying cams and carbs etc. M42 is easy hp, reliability and economy and as its already injected and electronic ignition turbo is much easier!

 

Also i have rust and bondo at the bottom of the inner rear wings which i noticed when removing the underseal. I think it may be turbo flare time haha.

Went mental yesterday and got my engine and tranny out! my mum helped haha. also been trying to rebuild my drivers side rear wheel well and shock mount.

slow day yesterday with tedious bodywork jobs but now really feel i'm on the last leg of the rust removal. Just about got the drivers lower quarter sealed up and got the rear tower rosette welded in. just needs a few panels and then seam welding. then need to move onto the other side and then fix a couple of rubbish previous patch jobs around the rear bumper area and weld on some lower rear wing panels that the previous owner cut off!

absolutely smothered the engine bay in por15 after i removed the rust and loose paint. Ive not got a problem with having it black as you cant see it with the bonnet shut haha! once i've done all the welding and cleaning up in the boot it will be getting por 15'd aswell.

stripped the rear subframe and painted it. cleaned up the rear arms and then painted them too. Time is running short so i couldnt take them completely apart :[

e30 318i (m40) gearbox arrived but my e36 m42 engine didnt :[ hopefully it will arrive at the weekend if i can get it redirected by the courier

One thing about Por15 is that it starts to deteriate under sun light and that it needs to be painted or coated. Just FYI, really impressed with all the work you have done.

e36 m42 is here! looks a little erm rough.. but hopefully i can get it all hooked up! i have both the e36 tranny and now a getrag 240 tranny! i got the other shock tower cut out tonight and finished up painting my rear swing arms so i can get the new superflex poly bushes into them and get the subframe back in

hmm so my m42 is actually an m44! throws up some wiring issues not to mention wether my e30 box will fit and my flywheel. i even ordered an m42 ecu! dammit haha.

 

its got freakin rockers and conical springs!

front subframe cleaned an painted ready to get the engine mounts fabbed up and you can kind of see where i reinforced the engine mount. Subframe must have been replaced at some point as some of it seemed brand new once the oil and grease was removed.
