Axle half shafts...

Hey all,

I am in the process of rebuilding my axles halfs (1967 2000 tilux) . I have the older style with the needle bearings, U Joints, drain plugs, and boots that hold gear oil instead of grease. I'm having some difficulty getting the new boots over the end of the half shaft where the needle bearings go, and I'm also nervous about the boots being filled with fluid instead of grease, for leakage problems, premature failure, etc...

My question is this....

The parts breakdown shows both types of axles, the style I have, plus the sealed type that uses grease found on 2002s which I have a number of laying around. Are the two (assuming the flanges are drilled the same pattern) interchangeable, (I don't have it together to get accurate measurements at the moment) and is there an advantage of using one particular type of half shaft. Obviously the older ones with the U Joints just look cooler, and seeing as I've already paid for new boots, clamps and U Joints, I'm going to TRY to make them work first, but I was wondering if I should continue to fight with it, or just rebuild a set of 2002 axles which I also have a set of rebuild kits on the shelf.

Soak the boots in boiling water and use a shoe horn or old sturdy spoon to get the boots over the pins. You can also press out the pins with a press. Do not try to pound them out or they will mushroom.

The old style axles are drilled in an asymmetric 3-3 bolt pattern. Most 2002's and later NK axles have a symmetric 6 bolt pattern. You can find the asymmetric CV's but they are not easy to come by. I found my set on German EBay. There was a set that just sold last week.

You can also change out your diff flanges and stub axles to the symmetric pattern. Clay W. did this on his 1600.

I dont mean to hijack your thread but im rebuilding my axle shaft on my 1965 1800ti and i am having a very hard time finding u joint needle bearings and also the clear boots that hold the oil in. any help would be much appriciated thankyou.

No worries... I bought the boots through Blunttech, and I'm assuming Maximilian could provide them as well. I'm not sure the needle bearings are still available though. Maybe someone else will know.

Needle rollers on the the other hand are NLA, so don't lose them!

When your reassembling, coat them in wheel bearing grease so they stick in place while you work.

Needle bearings, at least for my '65 1600, are NLA.

You don't want to lose any.

I got my boots from BavAuto. $25 each.

Followed the boil-in-water and plastic shoe horn technique.

Worked great. Took all of about 30 minutes.

I wish all my rehabs/replacement issues were only 2x as hard.
