I'm driving right by Ellicott City en route to look at a large cache of 2002 parts this afternoon. I've contacted the seller to see if I can see the 1600 ti. If the seller allows, I'll take photos and post them for everyone's infotainment.

Thanks Grice! Matthew Cervi lives in Ellicott City...

Early word is: It's a legit 1600ti and, as Grice put it, a "parts bonanza."

Jim, sounds like you might need to slightly alter the course of your project!

I'm in deep trouble now. Can't wait to see/hear more.

Would be awesome if your project went from 'tribute' to 'yeah, it's a real ti'. I've only seen one, it was for sale in Norwalk, CT 1996 or 97, Granada/Black.

I saw the car last night. It's the real deal.

The owner's Craigslist description is fairly accurate. It's a project, but it's certainly restorable. Driver's side rocker, frame rail and tail will need work. Some rust around the windows, but I didn't see evidence of rust through. Rear shock towers look good. The car was painted in white Imron quite some time ago to prevent rust. The body is mostly solid and straight. The trunk opens and closes with difficulty due to a rear impact on the driver's side that lightly dimpled the rear fascia and put a slight crease in the driver's side fender. It'll need a full interior makeover. I didn't get under the car, so I can't comment on the condition of anything below the rockers.

The car is filled with parts, including numerous parts that were purchased in the 80's and are still in their shipping boxes, unopened. Parts that I examined include:

1 Recaro LS seat, blue cloth, NIB. We opened the box for the first time. Angels wept when the box tore due to age. The seat is still wrapped in plastic. Mint condition. The driver's seat, installed, is a Recaro (I didn't check the model), reportedly also blue, but vinyl. The driver's seat is covered in black plastic, and owner claims it is in VGC.

A matching pair of Talbot Berlin oval bullet mirrors, black. NIB. (Well, not actually in the boxes anymore. I tried to pick up the boxes to check the condition of the mirrors, and the boxes started to rip due to age. At this point, I decided to stop touching things made of paper, as I didn't want to further reduce the value of the parts, or negatively impact any restoration/authenticity efforts. Having things rip in my hands as I gently tried to lift them reminded me of that time I dropped a lit oil lantern in the Library of Alexandria and burned the place to the ground. I though Caesar was gonna kill me.

Super Sprint exhaust, black. Never installed. VGC.

Stahl header, black. Never installed. VGC.

Brake calipers, NIB. Still wrapped in factory wax paper, coated in grease.

Brake rotors, never installed. Still wrapped in plastic, but with some signs of light surface rust.

Brake pads, NIB. Smallest brake pads I've ever seen.

Belt line trim, still in the plastic wrappers.

Rocker trim, still in the plastic wrappers.

Front air dam, never installed.

Window and windshield seals, still in the plastic wrappers. Might be too old to be used. I didn't open the plastic to find out.

Turbo/long range fuel tank, appears to be used, but in VGC. Not currently installed. Original tank is installed. Owner installed an electric fuel pump in the trunk, and planned to move the battery to the trunk. Original battery box has been removed from the engine compartment due to corrosion.

There are spare roundie brake light assemblies in the driver's side footwell. Again, I didn't inspect these closely, but they appear to be in good condition.

Original clock is still in the dash.

Prototipo steering wheel, installed. VGC.

Dash has a few small cracks, but chrome appears to be in good condition.

Center console not installed, but in pieces. Pieces have aged, but appear salvageable.

Door cards, black top with blue bottom, are in good condition. Driver's side is pulling away at the bottom front. Passenger's side looks good. Chrome looks good.

Owner purchased a 320 A/C system, but never installed it. Parts are in the car.

Rear bumper, not installed, is in the car. Appears to be in good condition.

2002 motor currently installed, with dual DCOE 40s, e12 head. Motor is non-op, and DCOEs will certainly need a rebuild. No linkage on the DCOEs.

Original brake booster is installed.

I did not see the block, but the owner says he has it. There's a head, which I believe is the original head, minus all of the moving parts, buried under a bunch of parts in the passenger footwell. I didn't examine the head due to the impact my moving so many things might have on any archaeological undertaking that might (and should) take place by more knowledgeable members of the community.

Documents include owner's handbook, service record, blue repair manual. The documents have seen better days, but they appear to be complete. There are numerous receipts, packing slips, etc. in the car, many of which are attached to unopened boxes.

The car is currently non-op, so the buyer will need to bring a trailer. I'll post photos as soon as the car's owner approves them for release.

Oh, one more thing. The odometer reads 27,127. KILOMETERS. That's 16,856 miles for Americans. The owner says the reading is accurate, and the odometer has not flipped.

how could you not be tempted to buy it on the spot?? great description, pics?

I WAS tempted, but I restrained myself by considering the fact that my 76 has been inoperable (motor out of the car) since last fall, and my wife would demand that I sleep in one of the cars until her anger subsided, which could be longer than it would take me to restore the 1600.

I've forwarded a link to the photos to the owner, and am waiting on his approval before posting the link here on the FAQ. Please keep in mind that it's not the lousy pay or the hectic travel schedule that prevented me from taking a job as a photographer for National Geographic, it was the fact that I still haven't figured out which end of the camera I'm supposed to hold onto when I swing it at the subject. So keep your expectations set to "dim bulb".

OK. Caveats and disclaimers: The lighting was bad. My camera is a piece of crap. There was very little room to get good photos of the driver's side or the front end. I was in a hurry to visit another local who has the largest parts stash I've ever seen. I can keep going like this for hours. Suffice to say that Jim Gerock could take better photos by putting his camera in a paper bag and tossing it down a well. Did I mention that I was tired? Hungry?

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,
