Hi -

I'm new to the forum, was recommended to join by mlytle in Alexandria...I live in Tampa and have a '71 2002 (stock) sitting in my garage with a wife who is patiently waiting for me to have it restored as her daily driver/commuter car. We're looking for a good shop/resource in the Southwest Florida area (Tampa/Orlando/Bradenton) - Need to know where to start. Photos of the Beemer can be found here:

Welcome to the madness that is all about these little cars..

Reviewing your photo album, the car looks like a rainbow of colors.

Originally Golf (yellow) with the trunk similar to Malaga (maroon) but exterior resprayed in either Florida, Sahara or ?

The VIN pointed me to the 2002 registry where it was for sale on eBay in 2009 then went to a guy in Oklahoma City. I see the OK plate in the trunk.

Any good background you can share?

Hi Jim -

Yes, the car is a rainbow of colors - three, I think - it does look like it was originally yellow, then semi-detail-sprayed orange, and most recently hastily done in what I would consider "Glidden House Paint" in some off-white color. Personally, I'd like to bring it back to its original color, but my wife really wants a brandywine/tan interior combo. Regardless, I think it needs to go down to bare metal so the true body condition can be seen.

I don't have any other history on the car other than what you've already found - I bought the car from the guy in Oklahoma in early 2011 and had it shipped here - he wanted to restore it or turn it into a road racer...I think it's decent enough to restore, but I'm not an expert...rocker panels and shock tower mounts look okay. It's been sitting in my garage since I bought it...reminding me daily that it's there, waiting for some TLC.

Thanks;

Don

Just saw the post. Welcome! Nice looking car!

I'm in Orlando. I can def recommend my Tech. Jim at German Motorwerks, 407.699.4151. Great 02 specialist.

If you need bodywork, Steve, two bays down. At the moment he has two 02s (one with a roof change) and a third on the way to paint.

We are starting to form up a fair size 02 group in Orlando. Swap Meet on March 17th. Email me if you want to stay in contact.

Welcome again!

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
