According to Rob Torres' website,the pulleys themselves can wear. I don't personally know how you would be able to tell, but give Rob a call to see what's up with the pump belt pulleys he had made.

Just a thought.

To change the belt without removing the pulley, I have done this once. First line up TDC on crank to cover. You will need to take off the upper cover and remove the screws from the lower cover. As you slide the lower cover out toward the pulley the belt will just slip between the cover and the pulley so you can fit it in. You'll figure it out.

The "ridge" on the upper face in the picture is actually the original teeth. The smaller diameter, middle portion of the pulley has worn down relative to the outer edge.

Later cars had plastic pulleys. These were reputed to last longer than the aluminum ones, although I've never seen one.
