Guest Anonymous
what exactly is detonation? is this what ppl refer to when they say pinging? am i right in thinking that this is combustion of the air/fuel mixture in the combustion chamber BEFORE the spark from the plug arrives? what exactly does it sound like/do? cheers knowledgeable ppls ozgeorge
Guest Anonymous
Pinging is uneven combustion in the cylinders and occurs after the plug fires. Combustion is occuring at other than TDC. It usually sounds like a light rattling when under load. Detonation is the same. Not sure if "detonation" is considered a misnomer or not. BTW pinging can occur on the piston upstroke and bust rods/rod caps. Run-on or "dieseling" is the motor running after you switch off the key. All of the above can be caused by advanced timing and/or low octane. There! My typing finger hurts! HTH! Ray
