Hey Speedwell are you going to cut your front nose up to do the swap. Im slowly gathering parts to do this swap as well. But I do not want to cut my nose. From looking at everthing I think you can squeeze it in there and a fan in front of the radiator.

Not unless you get a custom radiator to go in front of the original radiator opening, you'll still need to cut the horn mounts off. Or, if you really wanted to spend some time you could

-mount an electric water pump on the passenger side of the motor

-make a custom cover for the stock water pump location

-re-route the radiator hoses

-convert to megasquirt or another distributorless ignition

-make a custom alternator mount to move it back a bit

-trim the all but one belt slot off the crankshaft pulley wheel, run the alternator off this slot w/a shorter belt.

That would likely give you enough clearance for an IE radiator with an E-fan setup as a pusher.

Easy then... Just give me a cold brewski and 2 hours and its done. Or not.

Here is what I found when I did my swap.

A swap with no cutting is impossible. Well maybe not impossible but it does involve other modifications somewhere. The subframe is close to the oil pan, and the firewall limits your movement back. You could fabricate an oil pan with dry sump to get more clearance which may allow you to drop the engine some which may allow some more movement back and that may allow you to avoid any cutting of the noise. But you will have a difficult time removing your valve cover come valve adjustment time.

More importantly, why not cut?

Because I think as these cars become older and older there are less and less of them and the more noses we cut up the less noses there are when something goes wrong or rusts out. So I dont want to do any cutting to the nice-ish original car i have.

From loolking at the space and the engines we have at the shop i think it is possible and i have seen some pics of cars that have the engine in them with out cutting the nose. And if i have to go to a side distributor then i will. I dont think doing it this route will be easy by any means but wheres the fun in easy lol. It will be a year till i have all the parts for this swap but should have the parts car stripped and a bare block and head for mock up at least in a month or so.

Why would the horn mounts need to be cut on a roundie car?

I would think that if you planned ahead instead of just grabing the cut off wheel and start making sparks while gigeling like a fool like the rest of us did you could drill out the spot welds the hold the radiator support and front tray and remove it in one piece and put it aside so that it could be reinstalled if you went back to the m10.

Why would the horn mounts need to be cut on a roundie car?

Because you can't put an adequate radiator in front of the OEM radiator opening. If you did what I listed above you likely wouldn't have to cut anything, including removing the horn mounts.

I forgot to mention I meant cutting/moving the thermostat in/outlets because they angle slightly forward.

Block mounted dist would work as well, but you still have the other problems I listed. Trust me, I looked at every conceivable way to make the clearance. It's possible, but NOT easy and really not worth it. Just cut the metal and make some nice brace to put in it's place. These cars may be worth something some day, likely Tii's will, but the other 90% of carb'd 02s...I wouldn't count on it. Besides, that's 20-30 years down the road at least. 20-30 years of extra fun with an M20 seems worth it to me, especially when you consider inflation. Yeah, your car may be worth 20k in 30 years if it's stock...or 15k with a nice M20 conversion.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
