Guest Anonymous
I just did the 318 alt. conversion. One very important thing I discovered is that you DO NOT have to replace the alternator mounting bracket on the block as it states it the FAQ. All you need to do is replace the metal sleeve on the 318 alt. (the one that runs through the rubber grommets) with the one from the 2002 alt. This will save you the trouble of having to pull the radiator to replace the bracket on the block.
Guest Anonymous
with a hacksaw. . . I did have to put a longer stud into the lower timing cover and shim out the lower bracket connection point with some washers. Cheers! John N

Guest Anonymous
I've seen 318 alts w/ a larger body that do need the bracket, or 318 alts w/ the same size body as our '02 units, w/ this longer "adapter sleeve". I too was lucky enough to find one w/ this smaller body and adapter sleeve. I actually replaced the bracket (had the radiator out of the car) and put in the adapter sleeve. Now if in the future, if I want to use another alternator, I can adapt an '02/e21 alt to fit my application, or I can put any old 318 alternator that I get my hands on. Glad it worked out for you.
