I used to have KYB's in my 2002, and they were fine. Definitely good price to value, but once you upgrade to a better performing shock (SACHS or Billstiens), it is amazing how much better your ride is. Personally, I find the ride to be one of the more important things, so you may want to consider to upgrade versus going economical. It just depends how often you're driving your car. If it's more of a daily driver, you may want to put better shocks in your car. Just food for thought.

shot by 40k miles, whereas my Bilsteins now have over 150k on 'em and are still going strong.

If you're gonna keep the car for awhile, I don't think the Bilsteins are three times as expensive as the KYBs...
