I pulled my rear seat out coupla nights ago.....what a mess. The horse hair had mostly turned to dust, some chunks remained. Shop vac got a workout and hated me after that. All I have is the frame/springs and the cover (which is in good shape). I will be installing front seats from a Honda Prelude which are black cloth and wonder how much folks have paid to have shops recover the back seat. I know that price will vary depending upon where you are located, just want to get a ballpark before I get quotes. Anyone with a Prelude back seat installed please chime in with comments and pics as that may be an option.

Thanks in advance

Save the horsehair! I just had my front seats redone for $300. They put a rigid plastic over the springs and then new seat foam over top of that. But in order to keep the original shape of the seats they needed to use the original horse hair over the new foam. They came out great.

I was quoted $150 to redo the lower part of the back seat.

Hope this helps some.

Nothing much to save as most of it was quite literally dust. Terrible nasty stuff.

I'll bet you have a squarelight car--the horsehair quality on the later cars wasn't nearly as good as on the roundies--so you might wish to look for a derelict back seat set--with shot upholstery--from a roundie and use the pads from it to re-do your back seat, or simply take them to an upholstery shop, strip off the old covers and reupholster them vs messing with your old frames.

cheers

Go look at the FAQ on recovering front seats. It's very good and highly informative. If your seat covers are in good shape then restuffing them isn't that expensive materially...just some foam and a DIY job at home. I'd guess that doing a rear is a lot easier than a front, but I've never done either myself.

I restuffed my rear seats a while back for 100 in materials. I have the foam and a tutorial. I put a rear seat from an early car in now, with my '75 covers. I would sell you the foam for 50 + shipping... You can rewrap them your self.. its no hard. Unless you want to use Honda like material.

I found a local selling a prelude rear seat in great shape and may give that a go. Have to measure to see if my seat belt retractors that mount on the parcel shelf will work. Not ruling out any ideas at the moment.

padding and upholstery from a 320. Had to trim the horsehair a little bit to fit. There was also plenty of upholstery to cover the seat. Cost me about 30 bucks for the junkyard 320 seat and the hog ring pliers that came with the rings, so I had enough to do the seat.

To answer your question, definitely measure a prelude seat and see if it would fit. You likely could use the padding too and then your interior would match. Good luck.

I used kits from World Upholstery and a local guy to install. -Raine

Did the kit come with new padding to do away with the horse hair? How much did the local install cost?

I didn't order the padding, he preferred to use foam. I also had the carpet installed as part of the package, so I have to estimate the seat cover installations to be about $750 or a little more (w/headrests).
