After sourcing a rebuild manual for my Getrag 240, I have realized it is the first thing, ever, that I don't really want to attempt myself (mostly because I have no place to put a shop press!)

How much does a typical rebuild run for a transmission? Is a Metric Mechanic box worth it at about $2500?

I have never owned a car that went into 2nd smoothly. For my 32nd birthday, I think that is very much what I would like.

Mine is currently being rebuilt at Korman Autoworks in NC for about $900, additional charges if there is other damage. They do bearings, seals, and synchros for that price plus whatever else needs replacing at an extra charge. http://www.kormanautoworks.com/racing.htm Great communication, see the post I just put in on the "autopsy" of my 4 speed.

I had forgot that a Getrag 240 IS a five speed. It was only on the 83 E21 (also 84-85 318i)and was considered the worst 5 speed for a 2002 as it wore out faster because it was weaker. Not my words. I would find a 245 as they are much stronger. Not my words...

I am at the exact same position you are in except I am 60! after talking to the folks at Metric Mechanic about the 240, it seemed to make sense to have them do my rebuild. As I understand it the 240 is a bit of an oddball 5 speed and thus my 2002 was converted just for it and to try and adapt a 245 would require more effort than it is worth. MM's rebuild, according to them, should be much better than new and every bit as good as a rebuilt 245. I will put my car up in about 2 weeks and then pull the tranny - all winter to finish the project should give me enough time!

Of course if I was your age, I would just keep on crunchin gears until there were nothing left -

Ha, thanks, Jeff. I like the 240 and I was the one that put it in there. It is MUCH lighter than the 245 and nearly the same length as the 4 speed. I got it for free, so I figured "what the hell" and threw it in there. Its a great tranny, but the 2nd gear syncro is slow and the bearing seem to be going. The Metric Mechanic one sounds tempting but I can't justify that much right now! Maybe I'll keep crunching like you said and hope that someday I can pony up for the MM box.
