All,

I just received my 1973 2002tii from the shipping company. I bought without inspection but all seems good. The only issue is that 50 mph or so the speedo jumps to 70. Fuel and temp gauges act a little odd at highway speeds as well. Around town, completely normal. I am thinking voltage regulator? Any thoughts. Thanks, Marc

What transmission is in the car? You have a cable-driven speedometer (unless something very interesting was done to it), so that is where I would start. What are your other gauges (electric) doing?

I also notice a little 'bounce' with the temp/fuel gauge with the blinker. Car is manual. Only occurs at freeway speeds. The tach is ok. The speedometer will be working normally and then I hit 50-60mph and it goes to 70 on up. Weird. Also, I have a little up and down play with my steering wheel. No issues with cornering. Is there a bracket that needs tightening? Thanks, Marc

has nothing to do with twitchy gas and temp gauges. Since that was covered by another post, you know what to do there.

As for the speedo, it won't heal itself, only get worse. But there's a relatively easy fix. You must remove the instrument cluster and partially dismantle the speedometer. I did a BMW CCA Roundel column on this fix; drop me an e-mail if you'd like a copy.
