NT49MD-11— Not the 49 Mile Drive, Saturday 10 Dec. in 2011

Recommended Posts

Join BayArea 02 as we rally in San Francisco! This year our intrepid Trevor has been “...barreling down alleys and hilly twisty backroads” of his native San Francisco to set up another fun and exciting (and educational: how else do you discover San Francisco’s road history?) rally between Ocean Beach and Red’s Java House.

Take a look at [http] to see some of Tom Jones’ photos of a recent NT49MD, then mark your calendar for 10 December. The cars will leave the Ocean Beach parking lot (across the Great Highway from Golden Gate Park’s Beach Chalet) at 10:00 AM, to gather again after the rally at Red’s Java House, just south of the Bay Bridge, for lunch and photos. See you there!

Hi Jeremy--

You can drive the car you arrive in, or sometimes it works to ride with someone else (for example event coordinator Trevor von Stein rode with Paul Gommel last year). In a careful viewing of Tom Jones' photos I can pick out Paul Kunz's 335i in the group (having replaced his autocross and rallying 735, he brought his 80-year-old mother along for a day in San Francisco). But of course it's a little more fun to fall in with round and square taillamps!

See you there!

Hey 02 Pilots,

The Not The 49 Mile Drive is alive and well. Trevor Von Stein has once again stepped up and volunteered to continue our December tradition. A San Francisco native, he knows his way around town and has put together another course of sites and sights familiar and obscure. Guaranteed to get at least a few of us lost as we try to get the pictures in order before sitting down to some hearty chow at Red's Java House.

When:

December 10, 2011. Meet between 9:00AM and 10:00AM.

Where:

We’ll meet in San Francisco at the Ocean Beach parking lot opposite the Beach Chalet.

What:

A Gimmick Rally that follows a carefully crafted route through S.F. No rally experience necessary, although navigators are helpful. We'll have lunch at the finish.

Please visit http://www.bayarea02.com/ for directions and a few more details.

Also, please RSVP to Paul Gommel (pgommel@gmail.com) so we can print enough sets of directions and give Red's a "heads-up".

Is this a kid friendly event? My wife is not interested, but my 3 boys (9,9 and 5) want to go.

Yes, most certainly. Hopefully the 9yr olds can read maps. ;)

I may be in serious trouble there. They can do turn by turn, but... Maybe I can try to keep up with someone else. =)

Sadly I don't think I will be able to make it to the drive. I am having bad shifting problems again. I think it's a dead master cylinder, but I won't have time to either get it up to Sean Casey's or order the parts in time for Saturday.

My issue: http://www.bmw2002faq.com/component/option,com_forum/Itemid,0/page,viewtopic/t,366371/

Maybe someone needs a navigator? I am an SF Native.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
