THE VINTAGE - national gathering of vintage BMWs May 25-26

Recommended Posts

My return trip was much better than the one going down, although driving thru the VA/NC countryside at night was enjoyable. Marshall Lytle (mlytle) and I headed down Thursday afternoon about 4pm and immediately got stuck in horrible traffic with heavy rains. We both were worn out after the first two hours (only 25 miles!) of our trip. We arrived at the Hawethorn Inn at 11:55pm.

Friday's events at the Farmington Dragway were a nice treat.

One of my favorite cars this year was Chris {Skip} Leonard's Nevada 2002.

The Mechanic's challenge was also neat. Roll a small tire thru the cones, tag your partner who then removes (4) plugs from an M10 head, puts them in a bin then "throws" a designated wrench to the ground in disgust, then tags the first person to roll the tire back. Bill Wagner from Birmingham is shown here having a little trouble with the tire roll.

The drag races were very interesting and lots of folks took their cars onto the track.

The Rockford Run Rallye was also fun, but there were sometimes farm equipment and large trucks to avoid.

The Rallye ended up at Westbend Winery (the original event site), were we enjoyed a nice lunch and sampled some of their excellent beer (the Stout was very good).

Saturday's Event was larger than last year. Many folks lined up together. Our group, (MD and VA) tried to arrive and park together.

Cars were still rolling in way past the opening

Volunteers stood in the hot sun directing traffic (here is Aubrey from the 02 Group)

You will never find Scott Sturdy just sitting around - here he is helping an M5 owner back into place.

There were so many cars this year, they were parked on both sides of the street. Here is Don Derham's Inka 73.

My favorite car was Scott Barnes' E21 323 that he found in Tulsa, OK.

Amazing details in, on and under this car.

Anyone else notice the 2nd exhaust tip on this car? This is one of the cars in the "overflow" grass parking area.

The house our group was parked in front of had a very nice '54 MG TD that we chatted with the owner. He is also a BMW owner.

His two dogs were fun to watch.

Sunday's return trip was uneventful except for a missing M5 nut on Dudley's DCOE carb and faulty pressure valve on Matthew Cervi's 73tii.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
