So, I have a 71 2002 that the headlights/dash lights started going off intermittently when they were turned on. Now they won't turn on at all. However, the side markers and rear lights turn on-just not the headlights or dash lights. Bad switch? Bad relay? any thoughts? I have another head light switch, but it is different than the one that is in the car.

I got the 2002 bug.....

the 71' is a 6 fuse, and i have 2 style headlight switches, I tried the wiring diagram that was posted on here, but I dont have a Green wire to go to the #15 terminal...

same result as the headlight switch that is currently installed.

Ok, here is what I think might be the problem. Take a look at my old switch, it looks like one of the terminals might have broken off, but I can't tell which terminal number goes to what.

Does someone have a diagram of what these are supposed to be-and if thats the case, is there a way to hook up the newer style switch given the different terminal numbers

ok, thanks for earlier post-looks like it is a loose/bad high beam switch....

Now I need to find one of these

Sorry - I should have elaborated in my response. That thread had an early Roundie owner's manual which should have the wiring diagram in it.

I believe you can still buy new column switches - or post a WTB for a good used one in the Parts Wanted section. You might be able to fix your old high beam switch using some solder if the wires are weak/broken.

the parking light, tail light, instruments and license plate light fuses. So on a six fuse car, the probem with headlights is either gonna be a bad ground at the headlight itself (brown wire), a bad headlight switch, or a bad low/high beam switch... (or of course the wiring)

Since you've isolated it to the low/hi switch, try cleaning it first--use tuner cleaner if you can still find it, carb cleaner if you can't. Then look for bad solder joints/loose wires.

If you do have to replace the low/hi switch, be advised all roundies use the same assembly; the only difference is the knob on the end, and it unscrews.

cheers

Just my luck, I think I have a bad Hi/Low stalk AND a bad headlight dimmer switch.

As soon as I hook up wires to the Hi/Lo beam stalk, in the low beam position, lights on without key, without head light switch hooked up. When I switch to Hi position, lights turn off

Regarding the light dimmer/switch, when hooked up, dash lights on/off intermittently and then off and cant get them to come back on and position of headlight switch (turns parking lights on/off), but doesnt affect headlights and or dash lights...

I got the 2002 bug.....

Just been down that road wiggle the contact for your headlights switch that's on the column. I had the exact thing last week and even replaced the headlight low beam switch and high beams. But it was the connection that was loose. It's a plug right behind the steering wheel. Email me if you need more info 1971ginger@gmail.com
