M10 engine in BMW 2002 just siezed, dropped oil pan and saw that center connecting rods were dry as a bone with a haze of rust? 1. Can I save the crank? 2. Why wouldn't the entire crank be getting adequate lubrication? and 3. Can the oil pan be removed without pulling the motor? Looking for help anywhere I can get it please!!

YOU HAVE THE CASH TO COMPLETE A REBUILD AT ANY COST - LIKE IN THE AREA OF $2000+.

So if you have no cash - leave it alone. Sell it to someone

who can continue this cars journey. Or get help fixing it.

BUT DO NOT start any teardown unless you can PAY.

The car is worth more if it is all together, even broken,

than in boxes "some where around here? i think it's over here?"

the crank lost lubrication due to ??????????????????

age? miles? last 3 owners abuse?,long storage w/lack of care?

failed oil pump? take your pick.

you cannot service the block with the motor in the car.

You've gone far enough removing the pan confirming

you have a desperate condition.

sorry for your loss - this cars story is probably very long and sad indeed.

best not to go into how it got to this point - there's enough sad

news in the world today without hearing how this poor 02 was molested.

I am going to tell you a real story: 5 years ago, I purchased a Canadian E34 525 touring for my son, a real unique car with butt warmers, no sunroofs and a lsd. My asshole son ran it into a curb (suspect drunkness) and broke the oil pan, the engine seized one block from home, as he kept on driving it. I contemplated swapping engines, but my anger clouded my thinking, so I decided to sell the car as is. Nobody wanted it, even at $500! I called the tow truck and told them to junk it in their yard. The tow truck driver, said that he had a mechanic that might be interested in the car. I told him here is the title, have him pay for the tow. A couple days later the mechanic came to the shop, driving the touring! He said, he got a oil pan at Pick and Pull, filled the car with oil, and took a big 'ol bar and cranked the engine slowly at first, then easier, until it turned. I listened and I could not even hear a knock! Fast forward last week, I was at the Ford dealership, in the service department shop, and a guy stopped me and asked me "do you remember me?", I said "not really", ok I am the guy that bought the "station wagon" from you. Is it still running? Oh yeah!

The morale of the story: if your engine is toast, don't spend too much money on it, but don't give up on it, these BMW bottom ends are built to last. In the ideal world you want to rebuild it, like CD says, you will embarking on a relatively costly proposition.

I would say the center main bearing is in the same condition as the rods. When you get it apart, remove the two main oil galley plugs, one on block front and on on the rear. Clean the oil feed holes to all mains and then clean the oil galley. Air blow throoughly.

Symptom of a failed oil filter media and a chunck blocked the feed off the main galley. That is the first small hole encountered from the oil pump.

A radiator shop is a good place to take a leak.
