I am about to put the cylinder head on and was wondering if it is better to install timing chain and front lower cover before putting head on, or do I install the head and then put timing chain and front lower cover? Engine is on an engine stand.

thanks

the head is located by the 2-bushings - so the head does

not move - it's location is secure by those 2-bushings

then you add the front covers - tightening so they pull together

so the corner gaps are pulled together - you'll see if you look at it

tighten all the bolts/nuts gradually in stages

Look closely, two holes are larger for the dowels.

I think you want to put the lower cover and chain with guides on before the head because the head gasket extends over the lower cover and it may get messed up if head is installed first.

A radiator shop is a good place to take a leak.

I have no idea what I'm doing but I know I'm really good at it.

The lower cover is dowled in postion also at the two lower bolt locations.

....I'M SORRY - YES - you want the front lower cover

on first, then the head, then the upper front cover

PUT THOSE 2 LOCATING-DOWELS into the holes in the block

front and rear - it's apparent - gently tap them 'home' into

the holes

that serves to locate and hold the head gasket

inplace before you lower the head

Actually, you CAN do it either way,

but CD's right, you run the risk of dinging the

head gasket where it seals the front covers

together. No huge deal if you do, but it's possible.

I've done it both ways... didn't seem to matter too much.

Just don't tighten the head before you snug up the bottom cover,

as Jim says.
