Absolute Non-sense! Last time I tried to redo mine, the vinyl cost me over $30 and the boards from home depot around $20. Not to metion the time, hassle and accuracy of cutting those boards. Nice work Esty! Well worth the price. You can't even buy the materials from BMW and if you did, it would cost $500.

Some one is trying to do good to our cars and please don't bring them down. It is simply evil. The worst part, all it takes is some foolish comment like this to damage someone.

who said you had to buy them...make your own...

but buy a new calculator and do some price shopping or you'll be in for a surprise when you lay down the cash

I was speaking with a fellow FAQer recently and he said that buying the 'elephant skin' vinyl from BMW (see BLUNT) for the trunk was a couple HUNDRED dollars! I know from working on my boats that top quality marine canopy vinyl (the heaviest duty of all vinyls) goes for around $25 a 52" yard.

Doing a little math, an 02 trunk requires about 2 yards at 52"...more like 2.5 yards. That puts the cost in heavy duty vinyl at $50 or more.

True, you can go buy standard interior vinyl for $5 a yard, but that stuff hates UV (not a problem in a trunk). More important in this case is that interior vinyl doesn't withstand cold / wet conditions very well. And because it has less fiber re-enforcement, it tears much more easily as well.

Being frank, doing a top quality job at building a set of trunk boards, using cabinet grade hardwood ply, sealing it with urethane, and covering it with the best vinyl would cost a single person between $80 and $100 in just materials.

On the flip side of the coin, one could put together a set of trunk boards quite inexpensively if done with lesser materials. $15 will buy you 1/4" AC plywood at a big box store and another $15 will buy you some inexpensive vinyl. If you skip the sealing process, all you need is a $5 can of super77 or super90 and some staples and your set. $35 (say $40) and you could make yourself a set of trunk boards...

The caveat with both of these routes is that you have the necessary tools, time, and talent to build yourself a set of trunk boards. Do the math weighing the cost of those 3 factors and see how economic it is for you to buy a pre-made set.

Now a question for Esty... I called Blunt to see if he had any of the little right angle brackets that go on the bottom of the trunk boards and he couldn't find a part number. What are you using in their place?

Jay

i do them just like you see them...i don't attach any hardware...i've had sets i made in several of my cars for a long time now, all without those clips and they work just as well

i did try and find something to use long ago and couldn't come up with any substitute
