I finally brought home a '71 roundie a week ago. I've started to do a few things to it. It came to me not running, so I've been getting up in running condition. Still waiting on a voltage regulator in the mail.

While I was waiting I took out the gas tank and sanded it and repainted it. I moved into the rest of the trunk and just got done with primering last night. Looks great now. Took care of what was just surface rust. I think I'll move into the inside if the car next taking out the seats and carpet to see what condition the floor is in.

I have an M20B25 coming with trans, diff, and few other E30 driveline parts. So I'll be working to get it rebuilt while I work on the car. Nothing fancy at this point, just redoing the normal stuff like gaskets, rings, bearing...

I'm trying to decide on a color. I have plenty of time to think about it. I was think about a blue or smoke grey color..I'll post colors and see what you guys think later.

Comments and advice are welcome

Looks like a great project for you!

I could not see your VIN on the ID plate. Could you post it for us? I am curious about your car.

The 12-fuse box, long bumpers and side trim may be indicating your car is a '72 (not sure though until we see the VIN).

It's definitely a late '71, '72s have inertia reel seatbelts.

Nice to see some full size pics, your work space is better than I was imagining(I was thinking no garage). Car looks good, definitely worth what you paid for it. I do have that sheet metal portion and probably some grills.

Oh, interesting....let me see if I can go get a pic right now..I'd like to know also. Is there a site where you can look them up?

Ok, it looks like it might be 2572612. Does this sound about right? I found it in the engine bay and on top of steering column

Haha! Yea, every house around here has a garage. I have plenty of room in here to work...It's so nice to have. I would be able to do this without one here in Oregon since It's always wet.

Yea I'm gonna want the sheet metal and grills

Not necessarily by model year. Mine is titled a '72, but has a 9/71 production date. I did not have inertial seat belts as standard, although I do now. Interestingly, this VIN of this car is not too far from mine. Mine had the long tail side bumpers as well. So I'm guessing this is an 8-9/71 build, but it could be a little earlier.

See here. Your VIN reveals your car is definitely a 1971. I just noticed you have an aftermarket glass pop-up sunroof. I hope it doesn't leak.

I have a couple colors that interest me. I found these colors yesterday. Not exactly the blue I'm looking for, but I think it's damn near close...What do you guys think about them? Which one should I go for? I was also thinking about maybe blue on the bottom and grey on the top? Might be interesting..Comments please...

I really like this blue so far

I was thinking about the grey to the right

If I did a two tone, what would look best?

What's funny, and what drives me up the wall every time I see it is how all these beat up well loved cars have that little orange diagnostic port cover and my 76k mile, second owner, BMW serviced (till me) car for some reason didn't when I got it... Just one of those crazy things that gets me.

How about an electric blue from something like a Ford almost?
