Stumbled upon a "garage find" and am picking up tomorrow. Paid a whopping $200. Found it in down the road from the Road Hog. Vin # is 1667689. It's been in this guys garage for 10+ years and was covered with "crap". It has Kansas lic. plates but appears solid. Any help on history would be appreciated.

BTW, this makes #4 in the collection.

Blind Rhino/welcome to come take a look at latest find.

Looks like a calendar year '69. A recent inquiry about my "new" '76 to:

info.grouparchiv@bmwgroup.de

yielded info from BMW Classic overnight. (It wasn't Andreas, anyone know if he is still there?)

date, your new one is nearly 4000 units higher and US spec production. I did some production figure extrapolation some years ago and estimated that 1969 production ended at about 1668700, so yours could be either a very late 69 or a very early 70. Model year production ended on 31 Aug; BMW kept production records by calendar year. So if your car was built after 1 Sept 69, it's a '70; otherwise, a '69. Does it have red center tail lights?

When you find out the production date from BMW, Please post--it'll help all of us who obsess on VINs ;-)

cheers

Either Andreas or Christina will usually reply with your build date.

RH he lives in Newcastle. He saw my car in front of my house and knocked on my door and asked if I would haul his away. Said scrap value was $200 and that's what he wanted. Who was I to argue? I bring it home tomorrow and get pictures then.

Mike, Must be Halloween cuz I think I have a Frankenstien on my hands. Brought the car home and discovered the following:

Car has modern (74-5-6) nose

Modern dash(no cracks) and seat belts.

Still has solex and air-cleaner down to snorkle

4-5-6 gauges(wood-grain) and heater switches

Car has old style steering wheel

it has round tail lites with red centers

it appears to have 5-speed trans with no console but small plastic fitting around shifter with attached ash-tray which stops in front of e-brake

Owner told me it's been in his garage for 20 years(not 10) and the Kansas plate sez 1981 on it.

strange thing is the vin plate above steering wheel sez 1667689 as does the plate under the hood

the original color was Inka

As soon as I can figure out pictures, I'll post them.

Anyone in Seattle area wants to take a road trip this weekend to Snohomish to figure out this "monster", let me know

That's messed up, I thought I bought the only one in Newcastle... You got a steal man! Wish I had gotten it! I would of parted it if the body aint in the best shape. I can come up to Snohomish when I'm back for Thanksgiving and take a peak if ya want

Some explanations

* Car has modern (74-5-6) nose -- not unusual--roundie noses were NLA for a number of years so late style noses were the only other option...

* Modern dash(no cracks) and seat belts. -- original dash was probably bad, later dashes are easier to find...again, not unusual to find. And the early seatbelts (spaghetti belts) were a real PITA--I switched my '69 to inertia reel belts about 1975.

* Still has solex and air-cleaner down to snorkle -- if it's a 1 bbl solex then that's original

* 4-5-6 gauges(wood-grain) and heater switches--probably came with the late dash.

* it has round tail lites with red centers -- original to 68 thru early 70 US cars

* strange thing is the vin plate above steering wheel sez 1667689 as does the plate under the hood-- that's a late '69 early 70 model year VIN

* the original color was Inka --probably not--Inka wasn't available until late 71 early 72, and US '69 2002s only came in Nevada, Chamoix, Granada, Polaris and Baikal.

Check the engine # and see if it matches the chassis VIN--if so it's the original engine.

Cheers
