I just bought a '72 (not running). PO tells me its a 5-speed.

I crawled under the car and saw these numbers on the back of the trans.

32

225

232013900

Is it a 5-speed (close ratio or over-drive)? What is it out of ?

225 doesn't mean anything to me. The long number starting with 232 may indicate a 4-speed. My 5-speed has the number cast into the housing so it's pretty obvious what it is.

Lots of tranny model info at the link.

'02 4 speed transmission cases are constructed in 2 pieces - a main case and a tail housing. Both the 235 c.r. 5 speed and 245 OD 5 speed have a main case that's very similar to the 4 speed main case, an intermediate housing, and a tail housing.

The only "wild card" I can think of is the 83 320I 5 speed which has only a main case and tail housing, but it's rarely used on '02's - if the trans in your car is a 3 piece case, it's almost certainly a 5 speed - if it's a 2 piece case, probably not.
