I've been doing a lot of searching, too much probably for my own good. I've been reading some older threads now on the Ford head and the S14 head, but has anything ever come to fruition? By now all the photos are gone. Most of you are gonna say why bother? Etc. Etc. And I agree to a point, but a buddy down the road that I've been chatting with has the 4.6 dohc heads. I've got a spare m10. Am I bringing up a topic that should be left alone?

I think of this from time to time but have not heard of anyone completing the project of mating a non-BMW head to an M10 block. If someone came up with a reliable and "reasonable" cost way to modify an existing 16V head for M10 application I'll bet there would be quite a few interested parties, myself included.

In my quest for power I am building an 8v naturally aspirated M10 for my track car (Schrick 336, 13.5:1, sequential EFI etc.). Would love a 16v but cost and rarity excludes something like the M12/7 engine.

I'm just looking into it because I'm curious. If I wanted serious power easily then there are of course way simpler routes. I think oldguy actually bolted a head up, the Fords are 90mm bore and 100mm bore spacing if I recall. I haven't looked into any others, maybe Volkswagen? The BMW m60 is 89mm bore and 98mm bore spacing.

I know the challenges but in my mind I can't let it rest.

I think by the time you got all the valve train geometry worked out with cams that worked you would have spent more money than the S14 conversion. My engineer son and I were talking about it not too long ago. You would have to compare crank and rod positioning to the S14 and hope to use cams from that if you prototyped a head from scratch. Keep dreaming and designing it shows creativity more than texting and facebook.

Right, I'm sure it would cost more then an s14 to get it running reliably, IF you actually got that far. Funny you mention that, I'm an engineering student as well, and I wanted to try sonething crazy while I could still possibly have the school resources behind me.

The satisfaction of hearing your own 16v hybrid m10 would be awesome I'm sure.

He recently graduated from Michigan Tech. They have a Metalurgy class where they do projects like this and turbo manifolds and other cool stuff. I saw a model of an olds quad four and was wondering...

Don't tell me this stuff haha. I got to Rochester Institute of Technology. There's nothing really here like that.

Although my Dad and I turbo'ed our e30 two years ago. He was big into racing anything, and I'm lucky to have him support our ideas. This one is over the top but when I get home on break I'll begin the madness.

I got excited about the Ford head...

...until I saw one in person.

Then I started looking at wrecked Honda S2000 donors...

It's just not very exciting. The cam is gigantic in diameter,

and the 'lobes' are really ramps.

You could certainly DO it, it'd just be a lot of work.

And it would always look like that 4- cylinder that IH made by lopping

off half of a V8...

Now that's funny, a four cylinder Harvey, haven't seen one of those since the red step van a friend had 40 years ago

Now maybe someone at Boeing could get their Chinese partners to cast up some S14 clones. If they are good enough for a 787 seems a cylinder head would be a walk in the park. Plus they (China) don't appear to have a problem making pirate copies of anything else.

Um, if someone can build this then I think you can build that. Check out this video on YouTube:

I could not build a toilet seat so I have no real say in it. Good luck!

I love that video, that car is incredible.

One thing I read from Oldguy's post on attempting it was that the cams were pressed together? And that they might not be able to be removed?

I've never heard of such a thing. One other thing I noticed (besides the huge problems ha) is that the intake port's are angled, so combining that angle with the slant of the m10 would mean the intake would be coming out the hood I would imagine.

This is as close as I'm going to get my new project (collecting end of Oct ) is a Ford 2.3 Lima Engine with a Volvo 16 Valve head , turbo & injected 200HP with 10 psi who knows with 20psi !!! I drove it it pulls like a train even in 4th (has a 5 speed ) with f'd up a/f ratio of 9.0 (that needs sorting) Folvo engine Cosworth developed head on the Ford block ( Ford owned Volvo at the time )
