engine and drivetrain what are the do's and dont's of painting engines?

i was thinking of painting my rocker cover black while i when i repaint my block... can i paint the front (timing) covers and the head with some clear stuff to make them look better?? what do ppl recommend in this regard?

and bead blast to original metal front timing cover upper piece, etc. My Sahara block came painted RED by assembler, so I matched it with powder coated valve cover, and freshened-up other pieces with bead blast. Warning: Timing cover is fragile- mine was minutely cracked by a drop or something during the cleaning process and we only discovered this after assembly. Had to epoxy to limit/stop the resultant leak. Mad as hell about that: new engine does not deserve leak from a crack and replacement is a PITA.///

You can also polish to high gloss and then use oxidation inhibiting coating.......

I would use a cast aluminum color paint. Makes it look real good.
