Has any one had problems getting the dizzy cap to sit down and locate properly ? I found that after I threw away that plastic thing inside it locates a lot better plus ground down the locating lug a little.

i think you should've asked here before you went hacking

off bits.......

you may have the wrong cap for the distributor body

tabs and notches are for positive location

mounting the cap so it's positioned correctly

and prevents movement

a photo of your situation helps greatly

Tim - have you tried calling/emailing IE?

I'm sure that after how many have been sold that there are bound to be a couple of incidents show up. On that note however I've yet to hear of a cap issue so that tells me somethings a little funky.

Feel free to email (As it is a good idea to start with.)

I had the same problem with my IE Distributor. I removed the dust guard and the cap seats firmly on the alignment post. I haven't had any problems running it without the dust guard.

My biggest problem was that the IE Distributor didn't have an alignment mark on the housing for plug #1. It took me awhile to realize that it really didn't matter, that once the motor was at TDC for piston #1, where the rotor pointed when the distributor was seated was the position for the #1 spark plug lead on the cap. After I got this concept in my head, the installation was easy.

Good luck,

I talked with IE about this recently. They aren't really that happy with the caps that they provide with that dizzy. I ended up swaping back to a Bosch cap & Rotor which sits on there much better.

I am happy with the dizzy however, it's a nice peice, works well.

I reccomended that they charge an extra 10 bucks or whatever, and ship with the Bosch cap if possible.

Interesting. I had the same experience, switched back to a Bosch, and then called them. I said, "Do you get those caps from China?" and was told, "Well, yes, they are less expensive." I suggested they rethink the false economics of going Chinese.

I had the same problem with mine. The dust cap helped but cap still moved around to much. Went back to the original cap and the fit was much better.

Just have the new batch ready to start shipping.

Looked into the cap and came up that the cap is a little looser than the OEM Bosch one, however functionally it still works fine. I've listed the OEM cap as an option when ordering for those of you wanting a little tighter fit. As you can see here .... http://www.iemotorsport.com/bmw/2002-ignition/02tiidistelec.html

As for the China conundrum, it's not really an argument worth pursuing over a forum, we'd be at it for days.

About to order an IE distributor with the intention of moving my Crane XR 700 innards from my well worn 002 distributor, and want to try to find out if the IE unit will accept the transfer. I am making the assumption it will if it is an exact copy of the original Bosch unit.

So long as the innards also fit into a Volkswagen 009 distributor, you are good to go. I'm replacing the ignitor from my IE dizzy and had to call them today to find out which pertronix part number it uses. (1847a if anyone was wondering)
