Long time since I've updated this thread.

Attended some cars and coffee events along with the Deutsche Marque Concours in Vienna VA.  Some random pics.  Yes I have been driving this car in the rain. Can't wait to upgrade the wiper system after Vintage.  As Chuck P. says - pull, push, pull, push.

Had this service loaner earlier this week while Susan's E90 got a replacement guibo under a safety recall.  Even in Sport mode, the N20 4 cylinder turbo in this 320 was not to my liking.

Got marked down in points during the DM Concours on my ashtray, water spots, wrinkles in the headliner and other stuff (I had just driven the car in the rain the day before).

Anyone recognize the markings of this ashtray?

Looking forward to seeing everyone next week at Vintage in NC. With 650 folks registered, we will be busy.

After a few false starts, I finally received the tilting bracket from GTS Classics.  Stefan is great to work with - just be patient.

Had a great time last weekend in Asheville, Hot Springs and Greer, SC at the Vintage.  The blue car now has 777 more miles on it since last year's Vintage.

Loved all the driving on Friday and Saturday. Beautiful weather in the Pisgah National Forest areas.  Lots of time spent in 2nd gear.  Will install a 3.64 LSD sometime later this year.  I'm chasing a part throttle hesitation and may need to change the main and idle jets in the Solex carbs (suggested by MLytle during his ride with me to the CCA Foundation event Friday afternoon).

Here is our group on the 3.5 hour drive Friday morning.

From the back:

John S.  M5

Chuck P.  2002   Livvi rode with him.

Marc C.  2002

John (Crazy Greek Restaurant owner)

Chuck D.

The Stig  aka MLytle.

Susan had given me a customized "brick" from the BMW CCA Foundation for Christmas and we were supposed to get a picture from them but didn't so one of my tasks from Susan was to find the brick and take a picture during Friday's open house.

20170519_131431_zpsohbqoppm.jpg

Saturday morning (EARLY) we again headed out for another drive in the mountains and arrived at Hot Springs about 8:40am.  The gate opened at 9am.

I wasn't parked near any other 2002 but the other rows had plenty!  Got to see Jason Gipson's recently completed Verona which is stunning.

Didn't even notice the left headlight was cracked Saturday night.  Guess I took a rock hit during one of the drives.

Finally decided to install the stock tii muffler on the car this morning.  The stock chrome tip isn't available from BMW (per Blunt), so he sourced me another one that will work. Now both cars have the same set up.

As with the ANSA muffler, I had to do some tweaking of the resonator to keep it off the damn subframe.  It still hits so maybe the resonator has been bent before.

Continuing to try and figure out why my dash indicator lamp for the turn signals doesn't work. The (4) turn signals work fine, only the dash bulb does not illuminate.

Removed the long life bulb from the cluster and replaced it with a "regular" known good bulb from another cluster (74).

Here is a comparison between the inside of the 69 and 71 flasher relays.  They are different even though the part number on the case is the same.

71 relay on the left, 69 on the right

Here is something weird (to me).  While I was taking the cluster apart to secure the glass in the speedometer section, I noticed there were some tabs (fingers) for the tachometer that were bent.  They don't interfere with anything and the tach seems to work fine.

20170624_162641_zpsvlseyudi.jpg

Here is a March 1974 tachometer that has all the tabs (fingers) straight.  Anyone know why this is the way it is on the 69?

So, were you able to persuade the telltale to work?

You might look again at the grounds at the rear lamps, and the VR securing bolt "ground."

I made a few harnesses with diodes, to run power direct from the individual turn signal lamp fuses to the telltale. Problem solved. Tho not how BMW intended.

Let me know if you want to go that route.

Cheers,

Ray

Stop reading this! Don't you have anything better to do?? :P

I had the same non functioning turn signal indicator issue when I bought Vern. Replaced the turn signal relay with one from a 320i. What solved the issue was using lower wattage bulbs.

I am using stock wattage bulbs. The 69 relay will not give voltage to terminal KBL when the corner lights are flashing. This to me indicates a faulty relay. Others here mention (2) sets of contacts inside the relay, but I can only "see" one that moves. The KBL terminal is just above the ground terminal.

Ray- grounds have been checked. When putting the car back together I made sure to scape any rust/paint beneath the screw points. I also added a separate ground wire from the back of the left gauge to the dash.

Hi Jim,

I've read your blog from start to finish over the past week, and I want to congratulate you on your knowledge, mechanical skills, perseverance, excellent photography, and a beautiful car at the end of the journey (a journey that never really ends)!

Many other members have done fantastic work, Marshall, Heinemann, Class David to name a few, but much of their work is beyond my toolkit and experience.  Your rebuild of a stock 2002 to stock Ti speaks volumes to me.

I'm sure I will be referring back to your well-documented work numerous times in the coming years.

There's one thing...  I had a great little Bristol 1600 when I was in high school, and when I could afford it after college, I bought a Colorado 2002 and gave the 1600 to a friend in need.  But that 1600 had the greatest gear shift knob, and when I bought the 2002, I moved it to that car.  It looked just like:

59514b6f367ba_Shifterknobclose-up.thumb.png.31ee15a151be965b512f24d1435c4041.png

I left the States for many years, left the Colorado in storage and then with a friend and never retrieved it, but I never forgot about that shifter knob!  ( My friend's father got it running after 10 years of storage; I hope he's still driving it!)

Now, 30 years after I lost track of that Colorado I have fulfilled my dream to own a really cherry '02 again.  A beautiful Tii.

If only I could find a shifter knob like yours.

Anybody out there?!

Tom- many thanks for the kind comments!  Your Inka car looks very nice. I believe I purchased the shift knob from Jim Hanks in PNW.  He was selling some goodies that I could not pass up.

Update...

Been trying to upgrade the wiper system (and turn signals) to have intermittent wiper function with on-off via the right stalk, but I struck out so yesterday I swapped EVERYTHING back to the way it was when I drove it in NC in May.

NEW 73 turnsignal/wiper switch stalk

NEW Bavaria 3-position dash wiper switch

NEW intermittent wiper relay (wisch-wash)

I bypassed the stock 69 wiper delay relay, removed the stock 2 position dash switch, added the 73 stalk with intermittent relay and added some wires (using the 71 wiper motor), but still haven't figured out why things didn't work, so I changed it all back to the way I had it so I could drive the car.   For the past few months, I've tried getting the dash blinker light to work.  TODAY, after putting everything back together, the light now works for the first time.

I did receive a very nice 3.64:1  LSD with 40% lockup from Ryan Danko.  Today, I cleaned up the housing (and cover) and painted both items in anticipation of installing them in the next few weeks.

While the air cleaner was out of the engine bay, I decided to try the 132.5 main jets in the Solex carbs (previous 130).  Took the car out today for a quick drive.  Seems to run better although my memory of driving this car needs a little refresher since I've been driving the tii for the past several months.

If you got something from Ryan, you know it is "rad".  :)

The whole turn signal / flasher system seems to be designed to drive logical people insane.  It seems super sensitive to grounds.

Love the car, Jim.  Great seeing the pics.  What's the diff between driving it and the tii?
