  • 4 weeks later...

Received some new and used parts during the past two weeks.

(4) rubber boots, clamps, ti rear badge and some small carb parts (not shown)

Funny thing - after I ordered a front grill 2002ti badge at the same time as the rear one, I received an e-mail from the vendor indicating BMW of Germany needed a copy of my license and car registration. Since I don't officially own a ti, I wasn't able to purchase the front badge. Oh well.

Two instrument clusters also just arrived. These will be disassembled, inspected, cleaned and combined to make one cluster. I know that the real ti's had KM/hr speedo - I'm going to use the MPH version.

Well, I guess I should pick this back up.

Nevada 69 delivered Friday 4/13/2012

Some background on the car (now nicknamed "Oscar" by my wife).

photo.jpg

Cleaned the seats and vacuumed the interior on the same day.

DSC_1260.jpg

Today, I put the car on jack stands hoping to free the engine. M Lytle came over to loan me his short 30mm socket and breaker bar, but the engine is really stuck, so we removed the hood then I started pulling some parts.

IMG_7033.jpg

Battery/battery tray removed

IMG_7034.jpg

Alternator, distributor, smog pump and all associated emmisions hoses removed.

IMG_7059.jpg

Smog pump mounting bracket is huge. Two front timing cover bolts secure the front along with the entire dipstick flange on the back. The (2) pump bushings were shot.

IMG_7041.jpg

IMG_7046.jpg

IMG_7047.jpg

Maybe this is what is referred to as the "gulp valve"?

IMG_7048.jpg

IMG_7061.jpg

Next on the list was the muffler and resonator.

IMG_7057.jpg

I was able to remove the heat shield

IMG_7060.jpg

Engine wiring removed and marked

IMG_7058.jpg

Next up: Driveshaft, exhaust downpipe, radiator and whatever is left of the fluids.

Jim, you'll be needing the correct 1.8ohm ballast resistor to go with that awesome red coil. Bosch# 0 227 901 014

http://www.autohausaz.com/search/product.aspx?sid=dmkfpxmg2qm5sl55gwlsreup&pn=W0133-1627679,

Great project, I also have an original '02 Ti air cleaner assembly to go on my '67 Red when she's finally back on the road. Though I'll likely be using 45DCOEs and an Alpina style bracket to mount the air cleaner to the strut mount stud.

Do you have the Ti/Tii brackets for the inner fender yet or are you planning on using an Alpina style bracket?

Tom -

Not sure what value the white ballast resistor that is now on the car. Will take a closer look - hope it is 1.8 ohm.

I have a cutout portion of the tii brackets from a rusty Polaris courtesy of Jason G. (Eurotrash).

Spent a few hours in the garage while Susan was at work.

Moved the tii engine block from the engine stand to my hydraulic table

IMG_7062.jpg

Crank turns nicely - this may be the base for the engine in the '69.

IMG_7063.jpg

Removed the driveshaft. Thank goodness I bought a cordless impact gun - the (4) lock nuts at the guibo were on very tight. Thinking the hardware was just like on my '73, I grabbed 17mm and 16mm wrenches. These were all 17mm.

IMG_7070.jpg

IMG_7066.jpg

The universal joint past the center support bearing is stiff. I had a hard time removing the driveshaft from the guibo. The (4) 17mm nuts at the rear diff were also really tight. I had to crawl out from under the car (4) times to rotate the driveshaft then put it back into 1st gear.

IMG_7068.jpg

IMG_7085.jpg

IMG_7086.jpg

I can pull up on the shifter at least 2-3", so I thought the shift tower bushings were shot. Not so fast.. All that was wrong was the triangular support bracket bolt was loose. What a simple fix. It had been rubbing against the driveshaft.

IMG_7067.jpg

The car was very tough to push from the delivery truck into my garage, so I pulled the LF wheel which barely turned. Thinking the caliper pistons were frozen, I loosened the bleeder bolts. The last one broke my 7mm Craftsman wrench.

IMG_7072.jpg

I ended up removing the (2) pads from the caliper. Now the wheel turns freely.

Drained what was left of the coolant and pulled the radiator, t-stat, fan and water pump pulley.

IMG_7073.jpg

IMG_7075.jpg

IMG_7092.jpg

Yummy!

IMG_7078.jpg

IMG_7080.jpg

M Lytle also noticed that the front control arms were different..

Right side was replaced at one point with a new one complete with ball joint

IMG_7081.jpg

Left side appears original complete with riveted ball joint

IMG_7082.jpg

The underside of this car is nasty!

IMG_7083.jpg

IMG_7089.jpg

Rear suspension has seen better days

IMG_7087.jpg

IMG_7088.jpg

Weird ABA brand hose clamps with blue paint removed from the large radiator hoses and heater core.

Tom, can you share pics of the Alpina Ti airbox bracket?...I would prefer not to weld the Tii brackets if there is another viable/period correct alternative...TIA...sorry to hijack the thread, but it probably belongs here...

I've got pictures saved somewhere. I'll dig them out but for now here's two old threads with example pictures. Finding one of those brackets is on the list of parts I'm on the hunt for. Once I find one I plan on making copies. Or find a supplier that makes them.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
