any special significance to a '68 2002 from a collector status?

i have a line on an unmolested '68 that i could either restore, or perhaps modify.

is it better to keep it stock or is it any big deal to stuff a S14 in it and do what i want, from a collector/historic perspective?

thanks, but i'm not worried about the value as an unmolested 2002, rather if it should stay stock, as say a '72tii should from a collector point of view.

There's generally more value to unmolested, stock cars since they have a broader appeal. The problem with modifying a car is that you don't necessarily know if you're going to find someone else with your taste. Also, resto-mods and the like tend to be of more varying qualities than standard restorations. There's more room to do things the wrong way when you start customizing and improvising.

As for the value of an early 2002... Colorado is an unusual and generally desirable color. Combine that with an early roundie, as opposed to a later roundie or a square tail, and there's also usually more appeal among collector-types.

If it's an unmolested car, I'd leave it as such. They're only stock once...

I agree with the above

and

.."any special significance to a '68 2002 from a collector status?"

= YES - the 'round' tail has more "I want one factor",

and that early body is lighter than the later 'square'

tail reinforced body shell - which takes a hard hit better

if your concerned about survivability.

..." i have a line on an unmolested '68 that

i could either restore, or perhaps modify.

is it better to keep it stock?"

= if you plan on keeping, and driving for many years?

do what you like, and mod it to the hilt. But if you tend

to grow tired and sell off in a short time - don't

touch a thing. Preserve it stock. You'll have no problem

selling it to anyone - as stated before me.

..." or is it any big deal to stuff a S14 in it?"

= No problem at all, very 'easy' , plenty of tech

support here, special M2 group of folks who will

give you all the information to make it happen.

..." and from a collector/historic perspective?"

= leave it stock.

Colorado--I'm not sure Colorado was even a listed 1600 color that year. Hoffman only imported 2002s in Chamoix, Granada, Nevada as standard colors, and optional metallics Polaris and Baikal. Other US spec 02s from '68 and 69 have turned up in other colors, but most if not all were delivered overseas to tourists, military or diplomats.

I have original correspondence from Hoffman (dated 1968) confirming the above colors as "the only ones available on 2002s." So make sure the "Colorado 1968" you're looking at is the real deal...

From my Dad's mouth and memory, Colorado orange was first only available on 2002Ti's and after the first year or two spread to the rest of the lineup. Might not be the car in question's original color.

I have been looking at this car and may buy it so I too would like to know. This is a 1969 2002 and doesn't appear to have been repainted.

It's better to find it and get it running. And running well.

Refresh everything that needs refreshing.

Brakes, (including emergency brake), pedal box, bearings, steering components, center bearing, differential, electricals, suspension bushings.

Clean out the fuel tank, flush the radiator, bleed the brakes.

Fix the blower fan, ground the instrument cluster.

Then and only then, and if you've any money left in your budget, should you begin tearing it apart to modify it.

US '69s ran from 16625xx to somewhere in the high 166xxxx numbers, but never reached 167xxxx VINs before the end of the model year. It might have been assembled in 1969, but it would be a 1970 model year car. BMW classic can clear it up easily--give 'em the VIN and they'll tell you the car's birthday.

cheers
