I checked with 02Les yesterday regarding my VIN and he was not able to come up with any records for it.

I was just at the Fort Adams car show on Sunday in Newport RI and ran into alan717 who told me the story of tracking down the original owner of his '02. I just bought mine a few weeks ago and don't have any records whatsoever on this car. All I know is the P/O name is Romuald (I'll hold onto his last name - as I never met him), he or the P/P/O was a BMWCCA member. The car was last registered in NY. The VIN is 2585851 Malaga 1973 2002. There is a American Policeman's Hall of Fame Badge on the car, assuming there is a tie here to a previous owner. Anybody out there know this car?

Is this the car that was for sale in smithtown ny? I saw the photos that you had posted on from the RI show and was wondering if that were the one.

I had called up on that...apparently you were the fortunate one to get there first. What a beautiful car!

Yes, it is the one from Smithtown. I was really excited to get it. Pretty much original. Its got a few bubbles in the paint the size of a pinky nail nestled in around some of the molding, but no rot. Shock towers are solid, spare well is almost perfect (some surface rust), under body and frame extensions are still painted in most areas, just some surface rust where they are not. The only must-do on it so far is the center bearing, guibo and shifter rebuild. Other than that just fun stuff I'll tweek over the winter. Thanks for the compliments, but they should go to the previous owner(s) for keeping this one in the garage for almost 40 years and not driving it in the snow...I only wish I knew who they where!

Correction, although my title and registration say its a 1973, Vin look up on this site and 2002 registry say its a 1972. There is a BMW emissions compliance sticker under the hood that says it meets 1973 standards, that may have been the confusion.

Your car is a 73, the DOT/EPA with BMW made that determination hence the emissions sticker. Only in Germany would it have been a 72.
