Removed the steering wheel, upper and lower pads, middle plastic piece. Removed the blinker and wiper stalks. So the support suport is there so you can not slide the ignition off of the column. I ned to remove the tube that covers the shaft. I see what is like a collar clamp at the bottom of th eculumn cover where exits just below the firewall. Need some help so I can get this new one installed and get wrapped up tonight. I do not want to undo or remove stuff I do not need to remove

I don't know the history or why you are trying to do things that way instead of just replacing the tumbler. If it's necessary to replace the whole assembly--you will have to remove the shear bolts (if you're lucky vice grips will do it--otherwise a punch will release the torqued bolt--or drill a hole and insert a file end and twist the bolts out that way) Bottom line is that you will have top remove the whole column to replace the ignition assembly---i think it only slides off via the bottom---scoyote

The problems I have been having are the keys come out any time you pull them. Even with the car running. The second issue is the steering wheel lock system is getting jammed constantly. I have to spray WD40 into the keyhole to make it release. It happens a lot now. I drive this car daily and often way out in the rural areas. The tow bill for a jammed ignition will be much greater than just replacing the whole assembly. Thanks for the advise. It does appear that I will have to take the column out then drill the riveted bolts out
