Hello fellow 02 friends.

I live in El Salvador, and have just come across an 2002 from '71, European version, originally sold here.

I would like to buy it and restore it.

The car needs all the trim, outside and inside replaced.

Has little rust and only in the usual areas, sills, door bottoms, rear bottom of trunk. This is simple for repairing here. Labor is not expensive, and I would consider a full restoration, both body and mechanics.

I have vast experience in restoring Alfa Romeos, have a 3.0CS, so no problem is too big.

Shut lines are mediocre, doors need adjusting, needs new grilles, all chrome (stainless steel) replaced.

One peculiarity. is that when the hood is closed and locked,

it is abnormally separated from the windshield, almost 1/2 " too far.

I would really appreciate if someone could give me an approximation of the replacement cost of all the glass, 100% rubber gaskets , outside chrome strips, interior door panels and bumpers, as they are in bad shape and here chrome is not a strong point.

The price of the car, and please remember that it is already here, is around $5K, asking. There is some room for negotiation, but not much.

Kind regards,

Alberto

Alberto,

This is really a tough question because everyone's idea of a restoration is different. You can go whole hog or do it on the cheap. It depends on your ability to do the work, your patience, and timeframe for getting it all done. A lot of good used parts come up on the FAQ if you can wait. Do it a little at a time and you won't notice the pain in your hands or wallet!

I am in the process of restoring/improving a 76 right now and have spent about $15000 so far on what you see here on my project blog in just basic parts, little improvements, including the shell and parts car I bought. The parts list keeps growing as you take things apart. This is not including my labor taking it apart and putting it back together or the paint work which I didn't do. Check out the parts supplier on the FAQ like Ireland, Blunt, Espy and others who have great stuff for your resto.

Can also go here for parts diagram .and prices.

http://www.realoem.com/bmw/

those prices are not selling prices. if you expect to get parts at realoem pricing, you are wrong. if you want actual pricing, go here:

http://www.bmwmobiletradition-online.com/

and, from doing this on a daily basis, be aware of freight. and customs. some of the parts have to be packed in very large boxes, so they go DIMENSIONAL weight. if it dont fit in a box that is 12in/3, then it is measured length, width, and girth, and priced accordingly. for example the drip rail, 51 13 5 450 112/113, has to go in a huge box, because of the length, and the shape of the part. we sent a set to hawaii, and freight was like 100 bucks. sometimes customs hold the shipment for a really long time. we have customers who come to the us to pick up parts, or have someone take them down there. the best way is to find a freight forwarder, and work with them. then there is availability. do NOT expect that every part is on the shelf, ready to ship. right now, the door seals are STILL on backorder, have been since over a year ago. bmw keeps backing up the release date, it was last 8/31, then they just say it is still on back order, no release date. the early grills go in and out of backorder. then there are mistakes on etk. i use the white books for 2002 parts more than etk. also know that bmw DOES make mistakes. like pack a right side in the bag that says left. and if you get a wrong part, returning it is a nightmare. so if bmw makes a mistake, or whomever specifies the part does, you have to be realistic. i just got thru ordering a seam cap for an early rear bumper. it is made wrong. so we ordered another, also wrong. we did this 3 times, then the us supply ran out, so we ordered one from germany. still wrong. some things can be fixed, some cannot. expect a long road
