Like Johnson, Padua got good at pai-gow. Real good.

Playing the ancient Chinese game in which players use dominoes to build high and low hands and match them against the house, Padua would win tens of thousands of dollars, lose tens of thousands of dollars - and lived like it.

Soon he was wearing a Rolex ring, a Rolex watch and designer suits, and driving a tricked-out Mustang and a racy little Nissan 300ZX. Johnson also dressed in style, and drove a gleaming white BMW M2.

Though the authorities would later say the stake money came from bank robberies, Padua insisted it was all legit, that he was on a roll.
