I've been wanting to do this for a long time. My carburetor developed a crack in the housing and started a pretty bad drip so it was time to put on all the 318i parts I've been collecting from the junk yard.

Water pump to coolant pipe.

I had to do the intake gaskets twice. The second time I got them from O'Reilly Auto parts (Fel Pro brand) they were better quality than the Rentz gaskets I got from BavAuto.

...what are you using for spark control? Megasquirt?

For now I'm going to use all of the stock 318i parts with a "Frankensteined" distributor. [EDIT]: I ended up using the 2002 distributor, it is a Malory with Crane XR3000.

I took a break from striping out the wiring harness to work on the electric fan. Maybe I can pick a few more MPG. I got the fan from an old Mercedes, but it is the same Bosch part number as the 320i fan. The top mounting bracket is from a 2002 door. The rubber vibration buffer things are from a 325 AFM. Will use this wiring diagram http://www.bmw2002faq.com/images/stories/faqs/fan_wiring/electricfanrelay_sm.jpg

One of my injectors was leaking, went back to the junk yard and pulled some from a '89 325i. The stock 318i injectors are rated at 14.04 lbs/hr, the 325i are 14.5 lbs/hr. Tested with a spare intake manifold hooked up to a pressure bleeder bottle containing mineral spirits. Hooked it all back up in the primary manifold and now there are no leaks, pressure holds at 40 lbs. When the pump is turned off the pressure falls back to zero. Tomorrow I will replace the fpr and test again.

Wiring is finished and tested. Pin-outs on my ECU are

1.) Ignition

2.) TPS

3.) TPS

4.) Starter

5.) Ground

7.) AFM

8.) AFM

9.) AFM

10.) Fuel Injection temp sensor

12.) Injectors

13.) Ground

20.) Oxygen sensor (not yet installed)

Got it running and the timing set, but the idle is way too high, somewhere around 1,800 RPMs.

The idle air control valve is either not getting a signal from the ECU or it is stuck open. I temporarily replaced it with a Toilet water control valve, works fine for now with cold and hot start conditions, and it fixed the high idle problem. Next on the list is to wrapping the wires and fish them through the firewall. I'm thinking of mounting the ECU in the center console just beneath the radio. I really don't like the idea of having in the glove box.
