Hi Folks:

Just developed nasty clunking noise at idle on the '74 2002A. Goes away when I put the clutch in. I can get into all the gears, including reverse. I can feel what seems to be a 'hit' on the shifter. Engine runs fine. Clutch has about 30,000 on it. Throw out bearing maybe?

Thanks

I did a little a little more research on the FAQ. How about an input shaft bearing... or a loose or busted retaining spring somewhere in the system?

The best thing is to get the car up on a lift and have someone sit in the car and put the clutch in and out. Do it in neutral first and then run put it in first and slowly release the clutch and run the RPM's slight while listening and trying to locate the source of the noise. If this happens with the car stopped with the engine idling just putting the clutch in and out, it's not the guibo but something in the transmission or ahead of it such as the throw-out bearing or possibly the pilot bearing in the crankshaft, or as you mentioned one of the bearings in the trans. You wouldn't hear the guibo unless the car was in motion. Diagnose the problem a little before you tear everything apart by using your eyes and your ears under the car as described above. If you don't do this yourself. It's important to get someone who is experienced to help you. You would need help to do this anyway. Probably the guy who has the lift. Or, find a good local independent shop to at least help with the diagnosis. Then if you feel up to it, do it yourself. If the trans needs a rebuild you want that done by a pro.

If you are not planning on doing the work yourself, go see Ben Thongsai at B&D Auto in Westchester. I am a bit confused about the 2002A and the clutch, isn't a 2002A an auto? Can you clarify that? I had similar issues with an e30 M3 and it was the guibo. On an e30 325is, the center support bearing was completely toasted and did that.
