Its just plain awesome. This transmission is undoubtly technicaly more advanced and refined than the 3HP12, it detect speed nicely and seems to "know" much better when to shift.

The overdrive is just plain fun when cruising. Kick-down and medium downshift when asked for works perfect. It whines a litle bit less than the 3HP12, which is not bad at all.

I decided to leave the 3.64 rear end to be able to compare before/after. I am glad i did it !!! I was supposed to slap in a 3,90, the ratios seems just perfect the way they are, car goes off of the line way much quicker than before, i can make the 1st chirp the tires !!

Conversion is just perfect, no driveshaft drum (laser aligned), no tunel bang altough the clearance is very tight, shifter works perfect, just like if it where the 3HP12.

I am still at running-in period, so i didnt realy speeded it up, but at 80kph, it revs at 2000rpm ;)

I love my ultimate driving machine !!

Very cool! I have been following your project blog as well. It should make a very nice cruiser. Hmmmm, maybe I can get my wife to drive an 02 if I do this swap...

Exactly my plan for my Taiga 76 project...She loves to drive, is a good driver, but she is shiftless....:) Your blog is encouraging Pat; the hunt for a 4HP, though is discouraging...I may M42/auto afterall...

yes it comes from a E30, but be warned, the 325 one is different than the one from the 318. The base of the transmission is the same, thats it. Ratios and bell housing and tail is slightly different.

You need exclusively the one from a 1985 318i, with the driveshaft. I found several in USA when i hunted for one.

The driveshaft from the donor car is proper lenght so basicaly all you need to do is to move the mounts, which is far much easier and cheaper than having the driveshaft cut, balanced,...

Plus, you gain the sliding section, which removes a lot of NVH, and make adjustements a breeze.

The tunel insulation i added seems to help remove some unwanted noises, such as the hiss from the differential.

i am back from my first highway trip with the new set-up.

OMFG !!

2600rpm at 100kph (62.5mph)

The interior noise is very very low, the car seems to move forward with much less effort than before (??) and on flat surface it wants to accelerate quite mad, i went up to 140kph very easy, and the revs where still very low, like 350o rpm or so.

The only drawback i can find is the torque converter lock-up that occurs right after the 4th engage, if it could get delayed a bit it could make a 5th gear. Otherwise it is just plain cool to drive such an old car at 120kph with very low interior noise and low revs.

Excellent work! You were able to use the 02 speedo (not the E30). I assume some sort of drive servo? Or did you use the E30 speedo guts behind the 02 faceplate?

Much admiration for your work and imagination, 12 years later. Cheers!
