CA head-Ex manifold port issue

Recommended Posts

so..step by step..slowly I turned.

It seems any Tii exhaust manifold won't simply bolt on to any head.

My '76 engine is a CA-smogger, with oval ports.

The manifold I acquired has round ports. I'm not certain what year..maybe a '74. Dave R?

I'm going to cut paper templates to see how badly they are misaligned, but from my perspective, it doesn't look good.

Hmm..

all the original exhaust ports are OVAL like the hole

on the right

the hole on the left is molested

the exhaust manifold gasket (fits both 2002 and 2002tii) with the new-improved heat sheild attached (320i part) has oval port openings

and will match your tii manifold. Now, if your tii manifold

has rounded ports - I'd say it's been opened-molested.

whataya say ?

fear? yes

if the larger rounded - opened header ports don't match the gasket

causing burn through ?

head ports, gasket holes, header ports should all match - yes ?

p.s.

i think the tii header was modified along with the head

it came off of - both opened up - for MORE POWER?

It was ported by my Son for his ported head. I didn't realize it until now. If the gaskets with the heat shield match the manifold, I'd give it a try. Otherwise use the original

i have a collection of all kind of cylinder heads for 2.0L, maybe 20 heads i would say, i never counted them. All exhaust ports are oval and exact same diameter no matter the year or type (121, 121Ti, e12, e21, 1.8 and 1.8i)

the smog stuff is independent of the motor type at first, since in europe the same base motor was used but without the crap. compression ratio is the only difference globaly.

We call that ported.

Yes, it's been enlarged a bunch. But you could still use it-

the step's in the correct direction. You can even buy some

headers with 'anti- reversion' features that look kinda like that.

CD has a bit of a point- the gasket may fail a bit prematurely.

But the world will NOT come to an end. Or even change color.

So you'd be out the $16 in gaskets if it doesn't last that long.

Now, there are no promises as to any power improvement...
