into a mold and the piston is formed, forged pistons go though a forging process that uses intense pressure to make a stronger more dense piston.

A cast metal part is typically more fragile than a forged part.

Forks and spoons are cast, swords are forged.

In casting, the metal is melted completely and poured into a mold. Air bubbles can be entrapped, and some of the alloying elements may try to separate or "float to the top".

In forging, the metal is heated to just below melting but it is softened, then it is pounded under great force into the desired shape. There is no air trapped, and the original molecular structure is not changed (much).
