I.D. a part, what is it?

In the Haynes manual on page pg 141 figure 10.8 you see the voltage regulator, what is beside it with the 4 or 5 wires going into it, I need it! What is its purpose an can I live without it.

can about 1.5 inches in diameter? If so it's the horn relay (if this is an early--6 fuse--car). If not, please describe...

completely interchangable relays there. Smart people, those Germans. If one fails, swab with it's neighbor for emergencies, or to trouble-shoot to see if the relay is realy the problem. The relays are inexpensive and readily available from all the usual suspects - er, sources.
