Lets talk about Valves!

Recommended Posts

Ok...so I just did a valve adjustment...pretty easy actually. I did it to .008. The spec is .006-.009 according to my Haynes manual. They were pretty tight...probably more like .005. I noticed the valves got ALOT louder at .008. This got me thinking...Does it matter at which end of the range I am at? Is it better to be tighter at around .006? Or not as tight at .009? If you think there is more oil consumption does it matter? How about running rich...does that matter? Best power? I guess I am asking at what conditions would one adjust tighter and at under what conditions would one adjust looser? Thanks!

or every 6,000 mile,

whichever occurs first.

And, as the engine warms up the expansion due to heat will reduce the "clicking" of the valves. I adjust mine one RCH looser than c.d. recommends, i.e., adjust at .007 with the engine stone cold (or, as cold as it ever gets in the summer mornings here in So.AZ.

I heard a theory that an aged motor may benefit from the loose end of the spectrum, ensuring that the valves are closing as long and as tightly as possible, enabling the cylinders to produce as much compression as possible..

That being said, I go .006. ???

I adjust mine to .007. I figure that when the valve seats wear, the clearances get tighter. This leaves me with a little breathing room.
