320i alternator issues

Recommended Posts

I ordered a new 320i alternator. The shaft is to long and the key-weight is to wide for the 2002 pulley. Oh i forgot to mention that the 320i alternator did not come with a pulley. Anyone have any solutions? Help!

On a side note I do not have a blue wire as stated on the FAQ page but I do see where the D+ wire is on the alternator plug. Is this the correct wire?

Did you get the right one?

There are actually 2 different ones. The early 320 (I think 77 - 79) is the one that fits. The late 320 one mounts different too, and doesn't fit.

This is one of the few items I had to return to Blunt (which he was great in helping me with), because I ordered the wrong one.....

Whatever wire (regardless of the color) you had connected to your 02 alternator in the D+ position is the correct wire for the field current supply for your new alternator. It should be supplying +12V when the ignition key is on, unless the warning lamp in the instrument panel is burned out.

Posting this for others searching like me.  I could not find a good photo showing the issues.

So, I believe I made the same error and ordered a "late" 320 alternator.  Three problems (other than the wiring issue):

1. Top bracket doesn't fit

2. Lower bracket doesn't reach

3.  Spindle/shaft is too long & "woodruff" key is larger on the 320 alt.
