How to test condition of shocks

My car had Bilstein HD's on it when I purchased it 6 months ago. Given the many shortcuts taken by the PO, I have no idea if they were new or used when he installed them. Is there a simple way to test the functional condition? I can't ask the PO, he lies.

if you push down on the car, if the shocks are good, they should just rebound back to original position. They shouldn't move back up above the resting position, unless the shocks are a little worn. If the shocks shoot way back up, they are definitely worn. Or, I'm told that if Bilsteins have been sitting for quite some time, they take a few cycles of pumping up and down to get the oil moving again. This may be more true of more worn Bilsteins, as I imagine the internal seals leak a bit.

There are machines that can test the shock characteristics (out of car), but who knows where you would find one?

Don't know if this helps.

There are machines that can test the shocks without having them removed. Sachs came to one of our meetings with a portable equipment one year and let us test or shocks for free :) U just drove the car up on a ramp and the after some bumping up and down u got a printout on ur results.
