LED 3rd brake light install

BDB

Recommended Posts

Thanks to the multiple members who posted this solution. After attempting a custom cut 3rd brake light install using a 325e light, I gave up b/c of fitment issues. Lesson learned.

I purchased an LED strip light (30cm long or approx 8") from an ebay vendor. Search the term LED strip light and ye will find. I also used 3M double sided tape from Radio shack. The super strong one one, not the general use one that has a green/white checker board pattern on it.

The led strip light will fit nearly perfectly onto the inner part of the window seal. The 3M tape helped keep it affixed. Let's see if it can survive a So Cal summer. Anyways, I routed the wire towards the driver's side, ran it down and underneath the window seal, removed the parcel shelf, and threaded it down one of the many holes under the shelf. From there I ran it by the jack, down into the trunk compartment, under the carpet, and then T-tap'd the brake lights. The one you want to tap is the largest 7506 bulb at the bottom. Ground is brown. I'll take a pic of that later. But for now, here's the pics I took that better help illustrate the above instructions.

First pic is the wire path.

It did not add a very harsh glow from the inside. Although if you were sleeping and your head was on the parcel shelf looking up...err, that probably would be annoying!

I am so far impressed with the results, but I have not tested in bright sunlight.

There is also a side light LED strip available. Got mine from Advance Auto. Covered the strip, except the LEDs, with black electrical tape. It's completely invisible except for the 1/16th inch for the LEDs. The tape acts as a light shield so there is no glow inside the car at night. Mine connects into the passenger side tail light.
