Shifter shifts too much

Sorry for the stupid question. I've read many posts on this subject but I'm still having problems. My shifter moves quite a lot. Under the car I can move the metal "brace" that seems to locate the shifter. The shifter moves up and down and side to side. The bolt/nut here:

see #11? you need 2 of them:

you might want to change #19, also.

and you will probably need 2 of #19 here, too:

and i hope you removed that metal band around the guibo

..and there should be a special oil & heat resistant

insulation pad around the shifter socket which you compress

up against the tunnel when you loosen the angle support

arm - press the shift platform up against the pad/tunnel,

then tighten the angle support arm. Yes there is a small rubber

bushing on the lower end of the angle arm

and to repeat - - - REMOVE THE METAL BAND from the rubber guibo

Thanks for the input.

I found that picture in another forum and it was much better than any picture I could take myself. I do not have a metal band around the guibo.

I now assume I must remove the exhaust and drive shaft, true?

You might be able to get to the shifter mount parts with the driveshaft and exhaust in place, but I would remove them for complete access. If the shifter mounts are that bad, then most likely all your shifter-related parts are toast.

While you are in there, inspect the reverse light switch, rear tranny mount and trans output shaft seal.
