2002Ti, restoring it to its former glory

It has been way too long since I have updated this.... Sorry for that.

Progress has been very slow so far for a couple of reasons. I want to do all the work myself and outsource only what I can't learn or where buying equipment does not make sense.

One of the most time consuming parts of the restoration so far was when I tried to shape new panels from scratch. I learned so much about shaping and I made a new rocker panel, floor pan and a few smaller pieces that was rusted. But I got stuck with shaping the fenders, they really are a complex shape and my attempts did not look 100% perfect.

So I decided to order the panels that I could not shape, and then got carried away and ordered new rockers, floor pans, wheel arches, front fenders and more from W&N...

Now I am practicing my welding technique because the rear wheel arches do not have enough space at the back for planishing like I used to do it.

I also put the car on casters and made a frame to roll it on it's side to strip the underside.

I can only work on weekends, so it is taking me a while. But I love every minute of it.

My 2002ti is currently on it's side, making underbody repairs easy, so I thought I would tackle a rust spot under the rear seat while I am at it.

Here is the spot, its rotten right through:

Starting to shape a patch:

Further shaping:

Test fitting:

Cutting rust out:

Tack welding it in place:

I am going to weld the whole thing up tomorrow and grind it down.

It is a long and tedious process to weld, and I am tired tonight.

I got the time today to finish the welding and grinding.

The most time consuming is tack welding as I do 3 tacks and then wait for the whole panel to cool, and then do it again. Took about 2 hours doing other thing in between.

Tacks welds to keep patch stable:

Still some beating and grinding to do to make it perfect, but for today, I am done.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
