How can I tell if my 76 is a California car?

It does not seem to have all the equipment there and there is a sticker under the serial that says NON-CATALYST. Does this sticker mean that it is a 49-State car? I tried to follow the history back at the DMV, but they were not helpful. Is there a way to tell?

Thanks.

you have a pic of the rest of the engine bay?

Yup, but with the 318i FI conversion I am not sure what should be there.....

The '76 has three mag valve circuits on the firewall of the engine bay, a third fan belt for the smog air pump, and a 'thermal reactor' exhaust manifold with air injection jets for 'afterburning' unburned hydrocarbons. In addition to the rest of the smog stuff like the charcoal canister, the EGR system and the PCV crankcase vent into the stock aircleaner.

I can only assume the Exhaust Emission Sticker is no longer on the top of the drivers fender in the engine compartment, because if it is, it will say "49 States Version" if it's not a California car. I've got one in my carport. I'm not sure what the ones that were for Calif. say, but apparently something to the effect that it's a Calif. emission car.

All the stuff mentioned in the post above used to be on my wife's "49 States Version" so I'm not sure what was different on the Cali cars.

there is a " Conforms to California Emission Standards" sticker

if it is -

"49-States" is not a Calif. car

and of course (Calif.) with every control system:

EGR, Additional Air Injection, Distributor vacuum advance & retard-

a lot of extra hoses, pipes, devices, brackets, noises, vibrations, heat,

poor gas mileage, poor 'performance' - just a mess!

CALIF mess =

I've never seen a 49 - states car for comparison but I remember on Dagsites the year and designated build is shown in the emission diagrams. Visit them and look for emission diagrams and I'm sure you'll find that there are differences. For one thing, I think the air injection manifold is different on the 49 states from the CA .... but never having seen one, its just a guess. Oh, and poster CD mentioned the dual action advance, retard distributor .... I think that is CA only.

This sticker is on the left fender, it does not show the same stuff as the picture above, and the car does not have most of the components, for sure there is no pump, although the smog stuff could have been removed. Yet, it just passed smog when I got it from the yard, they did it, so they could have a "contact"......

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
